Hi everyone, Hope I'm posting on correct page. Summerhill Girls School Athlone County Meath.
My grandmother Catherine/Kate Kearns was referred there from Rathdrum Workhouse in 1912 until 1918 while her brother John was sent to St Joseph's Athlone until 1917.
I have seen some information about Summerhill but wondered if there would be any archive records from Kate's time there. This is a period she never spoke about and l have only learnt of this recently.

Hi everyone, sorry this is late reply l contacted Sisters of Mercy and the archivist could not find any reference to Kate/Catherine Kearns. I am left wondering if Kate never actually went to the school but it wasn't recorded at the time. Many thanks for your interest

What bad luck, Murrell :(
You and others might be interested in the location of Summerhill House, the forerunner of Summerhill Girls School. It's in the townland of Crannagh - on the western side of the R446.

Using the GeoHive National Townland and Historical Map Viewer (which is back up and running again) here's the Historic 6" First Edition Colour map (1830's) showing Summerhill House.

Hi econ 1219 sorry to say l haven't moved on any further with searches into this school and where my grandmother was educated. I had thought originally as her mother had died and the family had entered the workhouse regularly (most winter periods) that the workhouse were trying to help the two boys and Kate get some stability. I'm guessing the workhouse wouldn't have wanted the children living there infinitely.
If l managed to learn anymore about the school l will post here Kathleen

Thanks, do you know if the Summerhill Industrial School was separate from the Athlone Workhouse?
I am trying to understand what type of school it was at the time. I have three ancestors who were at the Summerhill school in the 1911 census.

Hi econ1219
All l know about the school is the reference to my grandmother stating she was due t to be sent there - perhaps the school was part of the workhouse. Maybe you could get more detail about the workhouse if you Google the name it may bring up Peter Higginbottom who l think has researched all the workhouses he was linked to Leeds University Yorkshire Kathleen

St. Joseph's Industrial School Summerhill Athlone?
The rules about access to records of Industrial Schools changed some years ago as part of a redress scheme. This was written for survivors of the schools but might be worth a look.

From my understanding, it appears that the workhouse was located by the river on Abbey Road, and the Summerhill Girls School (St. Josephs Industrial School) ran by the Sister's of Mercy was where the current Coláiste Chiaráin school is in Crannagh.
