Title: Fisher Loan
Post by: Thermo on Tuesday 01 June 21 23:25 BST (UK)
Looking for evidence of Fisher Loan, Paisley. Birth place of Helen Young, daughter of Thomas Young and Agnes Steele, wife of James Hilcote.

When was Helen born?

A loan is similar to a path, so if small it may not be marked on any maps. Depending on dates, I would look at their addresses on censuses, and address on birth certificates of other childrenbkrn to the same couple in case they lived at the same address (or in the vicinity of Fisher Loan).

I have amended my previous reply. Census and other births might help.

I’ve noticed that there are a few Fisher and Fischer addresses in Ferguslie, but no Fisher Loan.

I will have a look.  :)

None of the C18th maps I have found so far give enough detail to name streets, let alone lanes.

Depending how determined you are to find the address, I would suggest purchasing the birth/baptismal records of Helen’s siblings on the off chance they may help.

I hope that someone else will be able to help you.  :)

It seems likely that someone by this name owned land or property hence “Fisher Loan”. I wonder if any taxes paid by Mr Fisher might give you some clues about where his land was located?

I’ll give that a go. Thanks again.

A John Fisher owned property within the area bounded by Forbes Place, Water Brae and Causeyside Street, and possibly elsewhere in the area.  Water Brae is now incorporated in Forbes Place, but at one time ran parallel to the R.Cart.

The property is shown on an 1838 Plan of Paisley, held in the ScotlandsPeople records, and not in the National Library of Scotland - Maps Section.

The NLS however has a fascinating Fire Insurance plan of the same area C1888 by Goad showing a multitude of named and nameless access lanes to weaving, spinning and warehousing operations all relating to textile and shawl production.

I have found an alternative “Fisher Roen”, only mentioned in Helen’s birth.
