This is Herbert Rowles 1906-1998. He served in the Royal Navy from 1921 til 1934.
Is there any chance of a restored picture showing the name on the cap tally?

I'm no expert but all I can see, I'm afraid, is (Royal Naval?) Reserve

Cleaned up but unable to read cap motif, regards, John.

You could post on the military forum to find out more about his naval records .. good luck . My uncle managed to find all the ships my grandfather sailed on so i didnt need to do that research .

I have looked at his service papers and now think it might be HMS Fitzroy.
He married in December 1931 and was on the Fitzroy from 30.3.1932 til 22.8.1932, and he is wearing a wedding ring which I can now see, so well done with the clarity.
This was the last ship he was on before being demobbed so must be the correct ship surely.

I blew it up to 2400 dpi and the cap badge definitely says Reserve

Wow. I wasn't expecting that.
As he came out in 1933 having served 12 years this must have been taken between 1933-1938.
Well done and very interesting.
