hello i am wondering if anyone could shine a light on why someone's surname has no connection to there father or mother?
i am looking for William henry Bevins 23th December 1905-1988 and was married to Florence Bevins lived in warwickshire/bedworth/Coventry . But when i try to find the mother and father it says he was a step son to a Andrew Howard and the mother was married and devoiced to a Arthur Hewson but no sign of a Bevins.
Thank you so much

Where has the information come from?
MMN=Harvey.

BEVINS, WILLIAM HENRY HARVEY
GRO Reference: 1906 M Quarter in TAMWORTH Volume 06B Page 467
Could this be the birth ref? If the actual birth date is in December 05, the registration could well be in the first quarter of the following year.
What evidence do you actually have? The 1911 Census?
Snap, Jim

wow that was fast :D.. I have found a census from 1939 when william henry bevins was living in bedworth as a Colliery Stallman Heavy Worker and william and florance have the right birth dates. and then i have found a 1911 census which the step father has the same job as a Colliery Stallman Heavy Worker.

Ideally you will need the 1905 marriage cert. to find his father.
However the William Henry Bevins I found was born in nearby
Foleshill in 1882 but the name changes from Bivins to Bevins & back again.
There's a 1907 marriage for WH Bivins 1907 in Foleshill & names his Father
as Thomas Bivins.
Looking at him in the census I find the name change to Bevins in 1891.
So 2 marriages 2 years apart one in the name of Bevins & the other in
the name of Bivins.
If it's the same person of course.

1891: Foleshill
Thomas Bevins 38
Elizabeth Bevins 39
Sarah Ann Bevins 18
Thomas George Bevins 17
Elizabeth Bevins 14
William Henry Bevins 8
Arthur Joseph Bevins 6
1901:Foleshill:
Thos Bivins 48
Betsy Bivins 49
Willm H Bivins 19
Arthur J Bivins 15
The profile of the 2 families is identical.
On the 1907 marriage of Wm. H Bivins one witness is Thomas George Bivins
who appears in the 1891 Bevins family.

In 1901 there's a likely Florence M Harvey in the right part of Warwickshire with her parents, William and Jane. Same family there in 1901.
Perhaps the "Bevan / Bevin Florence married died quite soon after the marriage - mining was a highly dangerous job, after all.
Or the "Bevan/Bevin" surname may have been given to a child born without the parents being married?
Or perhaps that marriage simply failed and she went off and re-married without the bother of a divorce? A divorce at that time and class would have been unusual, and expensive, and once she's married to Mr Howard, they seem to stay together. May the child William Henry have been given his father's surname for that reason?
Have we found a death that's likely for Mr Bevan/Bevin? Probably 1905 - 1909 period?
-
... and IF that lady is the right one, her parents married in1875, Mum was a Jane Greenall before marriage.
Jane Greenall's father was a Joseph Greenall.
Hope this may be of help?

She might be telling porkies.
Although I did find a 1907 death for a William Henry Bevins aged 26
but that was in Kent.
-
I found 2 deaths in about 1907, in roughly the right area, one for a William Ernest Bevins, but not had time to check those two out yet.
