Edward Dourley, on joining the 73rd Regiment of Foot in 1824 states that he was born in the parish of
Cauldry in Westmeath.
Apart from a reference to it in 1938, I cannot find the place. Edward was born c.1806.
When he left the army in 1846 he settled in Moate. Could Cauldry be nearby?
Desperate to find Edward's baptism.
Grateful for any help.
-
Do you think it could be a name that was misheard, like could it be "Cold" something :-\
-
You could be right, Millie, but I came across a child's essay of 1938, (via the internet), where she states that people in Ballymore could tell if it was going to rain if the wind was coming from the direction of Cauldry. So it must have existed.
Perhaps it was in a neighbouring county.
Thanks for your reply.

The child’s writing shows Cauldry in inverted commas. I wonder if that is significant :-\

The nearest I can see is Coolderry, in Offaly and whilst the two counties adjoin, it is some way from the border.

You might try here re the weather lore reference and indeed your general query

There may be Facebook sites too.

Hi
Griffiths Valuation of Westmeath has two Doorley listings, but no Dourley. These can be seen at:-

Have you seen it written on the record or is it a transcript?

Thanks for all your replies. I saw the reference to Cauldry on the actual document. It was clearly written on Edward Dourley's service records in the British army.
'Parish of Birth -- Cauldry.
County of Birth -- Westmeath.'
-
There is another reference to Cauldry in an 1885 article in the Flag of Ireland newspaper. During a meeting of the Irish National League at Athlone, members from Cauldry attended with banners.
It exists/existed somewhere.
-
Perhaps Athlone library might be able to help.
-
Good idea, heywood ;D
The library re-opened on the 10th May, and there are telephone and e-mail contact details. A local studies department on the first floor (click Services).

Thanks KG.
I notice I didn’t give the link ;)
The snippet I can see reads:
“St John’s, County Roscommon; Kiltoon, Roscommon, Tubberclare, county Westmeath; Drum, Ballinasloe, Tang, Maconnell, Cauldry and Drumscally.”
I wondered if the punctuation gives meaning and also in a couple of the snippets, the words are distorted due to ocr.
E.g, Ballinasloe should probably be Ballinealoe.

Thanks Heywood for the suggestion. I think I may have made a breakthrough.
On the road between Baylin and Aghanasmore, just a few miles from Athlone, is Caulry Gaelic Football Club. It is in the townlands of Ardyduffy and Clonrelick, before the road reaches the L1437. The gaelic name is Calraigh. I will have to ask at Athlone library for more info.
Thoughts anyone?

I looked on Griffiths maps but can’t see anything :-\
I then looked on a Facebook site - I think you had the same idea ;)
Let’s hope something turns up.

Great breakthrough, hoople :D
Just throwing a small spanner in the works......appears Caulry GAA is in the townland of Carn Park (north-east corner), or am I mistaken ;).

I am unsure re the name of the GAA. I don’t think it is named for a place.
-
I am excited ;)

‘ In the R. C. divisions the parish, also called Caulry, is in the diocese of Ardagh, and is co-extensive with that of the Established Church; the chapel is a large building at Mount-Temple, attached to which is a school under the National Board.’

Heywood, yes, I've had a Facebook reply from several people to tell me that Caulry is/was in the parish of Ballyloughloe, Mount Temple. Great work. Can't thank you enough.
Now to try and find the baptism of Edward Dourley/Doorley.
-
At last :)
-
There are baptisms here for some children of Edward Doorley and Margaret Hevey
https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0946
22 April 1849 Mary Doorley - Edward Doorley and Margaret Hevey
27 April 1851 Edward - Edward Doorley and Margaret Hevey
7th November 1856 Anne Doorley - Edward Doorley and Margaret Hevey
-
Thanks again Heywood. Those three baptisms you found of Edward Doorley's children are the siblings of the Michael Doorley that I am researching. He was born c.1847 but I have not yet found his baptism. There are gaps in some Westmeath registers, or at least some transcriptions, so perhaps he may not appear.
The three baptisms you did find were all new to me. Cheers.

Caulry (or Calraigh in Irish) is the area comprising the villages of Mount Temple and Baylin, in older church records it may also be under the parish name of Ballyloughloe, finding a baptism record for someone pre 1800's will be very difficult
