Hi folks
This ones been in 'the too hard basket' for about 25 years!
I believe this is my x4 gr grandfather:
James HOWLETT
bp: 01 Sep 1776, Archdeaconry of Sudbury s/of Francis HOWLETT and Mary.
On the 1851 he said he was born at Woolpit, a fair distance from Sudbury.
James married Mary SHIPPEN at Wetheringsett on 04 Apr 1797.
Mary SHIPPON
bp: 06 Feb 1774, Sudbury d/of David SHIPPON and Elizabeth.
On the 1851 she said she was born at Wetheringsett, also a fair distance from Sudbury.
Their children are baptised at Woolpit between 1797 and 1815.
I am stuck with anything further on the SHIPPON / SKIPPEN, etc family. Could if be the many spellings of the name?! Also Sudbury, why be baptised so far from home and not just one family?!
Thanks,
bitzar.
EDIT: James' siblings I have found some baptised at Sudbury and some at Woolpit.
-
I think that you may find that Sudbury is not the place of baptism on the record you found :). It is the Archdeaconry that Woolpit comes under
This entry is from the Suffolk baptism index compiled by the Suffolk Family History Society

rosie
I had seen this one:

Baptism Place: Sudbury, Suffolk, England
Father: David Shippon
Mother: Eliz.

That is the only one I am seeing but it is sourced from LDS records with no film number being given. Suffolk baptism index covers Sudbury for that year but it is not showing on there, there are no baptisms on there for Wetheringsett.
-
Wetheringsett is in Hartismere Deanery, which was in the Archdeaconry of Sudbury until 1837.
Many SKIPPEN and SKIPPON baptisms at Wetheringsett cum Brockford have been transcribed by the Suffolk FHS (https://suffolkfhs.co.uk/index.php/pages/view/publications), such as Mary, daughter of David & Elizabeth SKIPPON, in 1774 and her brother Goat SKIPPON in 1770.
Marriages in that parish include David SKIPPON & Martha WEYMAN in 1779 and widower David SKIPPON & Ann FLORA in 1793. I don't see the earlier wedding with a bride named Elizabeth, unless she was Elizabeth FISHER who married David "SHIPPINGS" at Barking (on the other side of Needham Market) in 1759.
Goat SKIPPON of Brockdish, Norfolk, married Susanna MOYSE at Bungay (St Mary) in 1793.

Hello and thank you David,
I had noticed the marriage of David to Martha WEYMAN in 1779 in which I think it noted he was single. I wondered if he may of been a brother to my Mary. Now 'Goat' is given name I have not come across in my many years. Thank you for that.
Hmmm, SHIPPINGS phonetically is a possibility. I have seen so many variations of the surname.
Regards
bitzar.

An old post I now, but could sks please check the burial record for David SKIPPEN at Wetheringsett for 1760 for any further info.
Many thanks and Merry Christmas,
bitzar.

Burial date 09 Apr 1760. Transcript on FindMyPast gives parent's names as William and Eleanor, implying this David was a child.
Added
Corresponding baptism with same parents
28 May 1758
-
You may have these but, two other David's buried in Wetheringsett
buried 31 Dec 1818 (birth abt 1733)
buried 01 Mar 1821 (birth abt 1759)
-
The nearest marriage I can find for William is on 12 Dec 1757 at Earl Stonham, bride Ellen Bullet. This is a transcript so the name could have been abbreviated.
-
Marriages in that parish include David SKIPPON & Martha WEYMAN in 1779 and widower David SKIPPON & Ann FLORA in 1793.
Martha w/o David buried W'sett 17 Apr 1793
David remarried 10 Oct 1793
-
Thank you Lizzie for all the info. I'm attempting to work out siblings and possible cousins.
The David that died in 1760, was a William also buried around the same day with the same parents?
Many thanks,
bitzar.
-
FindMyPast shows the burial of a William on the same day, with no mention of parents.
The record for David is from England Deaths & Burials 1538-1991. There is no William in that year in that record set.
The record for William is from National Burial Index For England & Wales. There is no record for David in that year on the NBI.
I have looked at a few other burials in W'sett for that year and all the ones I've looked at have entries on each record set. England Deaths & Burials 1538-1991 gives parents names if a child burial, NBI doesn't.
i am wondering whether the transcriber of the NBI has picked up on the name William from David's record and thought that he was the person buried.
-
Hmmmmm. Wm and Eleanor baptised both a David and a William. The burial of both issue could be correct. Another William was baptised in 1761.
The name David repeats across generations and cousins which doesnt help matters. Many tree's have this David buried in 1821 bit I think he may be a cousin David which I cannot find a baptism for, s/of David and Elizabeth.
Thanks again,
bitzar.
-
I can see a William bapt in 1759 - parents William and Eleanor, but not one in 1761

There is a baptism of a David on 23 Sep 1759 at Willisham, s/o David and Elizabeth, but that's about 13 miles away.
added
but close to Barking where a David married Elizabeth Fisher

Now 'Goat' is given name I have not come across in my many years. Thank you for that.
There are a number of people with the surname Goat around Wetheringsett, but haven't found any actually in the village. There is also a burial of a Goat Sheppard at W'sett on 05 Aug 1766. No age given, but note says single, so I think he would be an adult. There is a baptism of a Goat Sheppard in Thorndon on 03 Oct 1736 s/o John and Mary. May be a connection.

I can't find a Marriage image on 2 Subs'n sites.
One site has decided her name was Shippen and the other Skippen.
Present at Marriage as Witnesses?
Who were the two present at the 1797 Marriage as witnesses and was the marriage by Banns or Licence?
If one was under age and if by Licence, a parent may be noted on the Marriage Allegation and Bond (for a Licence), sometimes his/ her place of residence.
Some Licences confirm if Widower / Widow and sometimes their status was not always stated in the Parish Marriage Register (I once came across a Marriage Licence with the Widow remarrying at 19).
Witnesses at a Marriage
Usually are:-
Relatives or
Church staff
Sometimes Neighbours,
someone from their own Church, (Congregation or Meeting if Nonconformist)
or Work Colleagues
Or even a mix of the above.

Lizzie, the second Wm I found baptised 20 Mar 1761 and buried 1763. I believe there were two more... very sad.
The David baptism is a great find. His siblings (probable) Goat and Mary mentioned earlier baptised 1770 and 1774 at Wetheringsett.
I've just looked up the buried of Goate Shippard, single man that you noted. At what age would you be noted as a man?! How long is a piece of string?
Mark, appreciate your input. The Howlett's had been Blacksmith's for many generations. It was the son of this James, William Thomas and his family who arrived into Australia in 1852. He was also a Blacksmith along with his sons. Wm being my x3 gr grandfather. The burial you mentioned at Crowlands is a daughter of this William.
Marriage: I've only seen a transcription of the 04 Apr 1797 marriage of James Howlett and Mary Skippen. Witnesses: James QUINTON, Susan GARLAND. I'm not familiar with these names.
I will also check your suggesting's at the national achives. I def have Francis Howlett's born Woolpit.
Many thanks,
bitzar.

The Harleian Society's copies of the Sudbury Archdeaconry marriage licence allegations are also available from the Internet Archive. I've added hyperlinks for these volume numbers:
Vol. 69 (https://archive.org/details/allegationsforma69copy2chur/page/n5/mode/2up) - Part 1: 1684-1754
Vol. 70 (https://archive.org/details/allegationsforma70chur/page/n5/mode/2up) - Part 2: 1755-1781 with index to parts 1 & 2
Vol. 71 (https://archive.org/details/allegationsforma71chur/page/n5/mode/2up) - Part 3: 1782-1814
Vol. 72 (https://archive.org/details/allegationsforma72chur/page/n5/mode/2up) - Part 4: 1815-1839 with index to parts 3 & 4
Brides are indexed under both maiden and married surnames but there is no Mary Shippen etc. and the only couple named James and Mary Howlet(t) in vol. 3 were to marry at Brome in 1793.
The Wetheringsett marriage register should state whether the 1797 wedding was authorised by a licence. It may have been issued by a surrogate of the Norwich Consistory Court. The NCC bonds and allegations can be browsed at FamilySearch.org (https://www.familysearch.org/search/image/index?owc=M8VV-QNL%3A160750101%2C161217701%3Fcc%3D1824690&cc=1824690) or Findmypast. I don't know how many of them have been indexed.
