Hi All,
It is now getting a little bit confusing with my research. I am researching the McInnes family and I have a Dugald McInnes born 1787 in Ballachulish and died in 1858, he drowned off the Ballachulish ferry and his body was not found.
I have his death certificate naming his father as John McInnes and his mother has Catherine Rankin.
Unfortunately, I cannot find any details of Dugald's mother and father, either Dob's/marriage/DoD. Tried Scotlands people etc but not having much luck. Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
Regards

Glasgow Herald 27 Dec 1858
....article which appeared in a recent number of the Herald, relating to the disappearance of Dugald M'Innes, late of Tayfuirst, Glencoe, who is sup- posed to have been drowned when on his way home from the last Fort-William market, by falling over the pier on ...
you need to create an account, and buy credit to see the article.
Who is the informant on the death certificate?
What do you know about marriage, children for Dugald McInness?
What was his occupation?
-
Hi,
The name of the informant was possibly Dugald McInnes (son) as far as I can see, the certificate is not too good to read.
Dugald McInnes married Kate Johnson in 1812, they had about 11 children but I have not confirmed the amount of children yet. I do not know his occupation but his father John was a crofter.
Hope this helps

A possible brother for Dougald?
Duncan MCINNIS
Parents JOHN MCINNIS/KATE RANKIN
27/02/1784
520/10 62
Kilmallie
Possible death...if correct, not quite 100 but close enough!
Duncan MCINNES
100
Mother's maiden name RANKIN
1878
525/3 10
Glencoe and Ballachulish
There is also a Catherine McInnis, also in Kilmallie, in 1781. Mother showing as Mary Rankin, father as John McInnis. Mary may in error (or a different couple with very similar names).

A family tree on A/try has an Angus born c.1800 in Callart Kilmallie as another son.
If you have a subs, this is the link for that tree www.ancestry.co.uk/family-tree/person/tree/43511298/person/122167577662/facts
His death is given as being on 14 APR 1875 Carnoch, Glencoe so easy enough for you to check whether he is a sibling to Dougald. This looks to be the entry on SP:
Angus MCINNES
78
Mother's maiden name RANKIN
1875
525/3 10
Glencoe and Ballachulish
This tree also includes another brother, Hugh Ewen McInnes (1792–1856). These first names are variants. Guessing they have come up different on records. Death cert should be on SP, showing as being in Glencoe area. I think this must be the death here:
Ewen MACINNES
Age 61
Mother's maiden name RANKIN
1856
525/3 4
Glencoe and Ballachulish

Another brother?

There could be more that one couple with this combination of surnames in the area, but a couple more to consider checking:
Mary MCINNES
86
Mother's maiden name RANKIN
1879
525/3 1
Glencoe and Ballachulish
Margaret MCINNES
70
Mother's maiden name RANKIN
1878
506/ 5
Ballachulish and Corran Of Ardgour

So, in summary, a possible line of siblings for Dougald could be the following:
John c. 1775 - 1855
Catherine c. 1781 - ?
Duncan c. 1784 - 1878
Dougald c. 1787 - 1858
Mary c. 1793 - 1879
Ewen/Hugh c. 1795 - 1856
Angus c. 1797 1875
Margaret c. 1808 - 1878
Margaret's one seems maybe too much of a gap, although her age at death might have been misreported.
Viewing these deaths on SP will let you confirm whether they were siblings to your Dougald. Researching siblings can sometimes provide further clues to parents.

Hi All,
Thank you so much for all the information, I will do some more research with what you have given me.
I will get back to you soon if I get some more problems. Once again thank you all.

Just seen this post. Dugald MacInnes and his wife Kate Johnston were my great great great grandparents. I am descended from their son Donald MacInnes and his wife Catherine MacColl. I have a HUGE amount on the family. They were Episcopalians so very few records of the family appear in the OPR. The family did originate in Callart before crossing Loch Leven to Carnoch and Tigh Phuirst in the mid 1820's. Kate Johnston was from the abandoned settlement of Tollie in Glen Nevis.
Dugald did indeed have a brother Hugh(Ewen) from whom the late Bishop Duncan MacInnes (Episcopal Bishop of Moray was descended), a brother Duncan, a brother Angus and a sister Mary that I know about. Many many descendants scattered across the world of John MacInnes and Kate Rankin.
