So basically what’s happened is I have found out that my dad had a daughter when he lived in Scotland before he married my mum and had me and my siblings I literally have limited information the birth mothers name etc and the address in which they lived at the time I literally keep hitting a brick wall I haven’t got any one else to help obtain any more info and someone had suggested the centres in Scotland. I live very far from Scotland and really struggling where else to go for some information

I would first go to Scotlands People. It's a pay to view (by purchasinf credits) but reasonable and you could do initial searches without using any.
https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
If you know of the approximate date, Mother's name and area, you could then search the birth records for just females. Also, if you are lucky, she might be recorded under the father's surname.
This might work if you have a reasonable idea of the above parameters.

If all else fails, you could employ a professional researcher?
I have had to do that twice in the past 40 years!
First for records in Jersey. 3xG Grandfather was born there. Family were only there for 5 years.
And second for Railway records at The National Archives.
Both times it was worth the money ;D

Thanks for that, Ruskie :)
So, if the OP knows the mother's mn, the address/area where the sister was born and the year 1975/6. it would be possible to do some searches of SP to list some possibles.
-
That’s great thank you for your replies
I have looked through Scotland people so if I purchase credits will that alllw me to view further details as I’m not 100 percent certain of my sisters name more the birth mother details thank you
-
As it was 1975/6, you'd have to purchase the cert(s) rather than view full details online. SP has a 100 years rule for births. You can still see outline info, though, without using credits.
-
Oh I see so if within 100 years you can just view online as i put the mother’s surname in and it’s brought up a list of girls names born in the area in the time frame but I don’t know if they belong to who I am looking for as doesn’t show me if linked to the birth mothers name
-
Sorry I’m new to this yous are all being so helpful
-
If the father was present when her birth was registered her name could be registered under his surname. If he wasn't it would be under the mother's surname as he had to be there to approve the use of his name. Hope this helps!

Ah yes of course so may be worth me trying both surnames then just incase thank you

Hi, this post is almost word for word the exact position that I am in, down to the detail. The England location mentioned is also relevant as is the Scotland one.
Would the original poster be able to message me on the off chance that we have been looking for the same person.

Hi
trying to send you a PM but it says your inbox is full? I have been involved in this search and maybe able to pass on information in case McTierk doesn't see your message. PM me!

New members need to make 2 or 3 posts in order to use Personal Message system.
-
Hadn't noticed poster had only made 1 post, solves that problem.
thanks

Just for info
It can take a while for new posters replies to show on thread...so it may look like there is no response if poster online.

Hi,
Thankyou for the message and for the other poster who pointed out why my inbox is showing as both full and will not allow me to reply to the 1 message in it.
-
I'm a newbie here which is all part of the needle in a haystack search situation that I find myself in. A search using particulars brought up the original post. I have some details though no mother's surname (have first) and no half sibling name (other than Father's surname - assuming this was used). Approx years of birth tally up as does potential situation/locations.

Hi Jingles 321
good news is I have contacted the original poster, McTierk, so she/he is now aware you are searching for them. They have made progress with the search and has more info on the subject. They will be in touch soon.
I have sent you a PM, and explained how you can contact McTierk direct.
keep in touch

Use Scotlands People it is a free site to research but if you want a particular document you need to pay for it . I have found it very useful as they had some detailed documents that include parents names occupations and even their birth places which made it very useful to confirm information and not just guess between 2 John Smith's.
-
Excellent advice, except that the document the OP is looking for is not available online because it is after the cut-off period for online viewing
- 100 years for births
- 75 years for marriages
- 50 years for births
