Hi,
Many years ago I was given a Dolland Day or Night two piece telescope by my grandmother which is engraved with the name Captain J. A. Fisk - London. She didn't know how it ended up in our family in Lowestoft, it could possibly have been through my grandfather's side of the family.
It would be great to know more about Captain J. A. Fisk, any help/advice would be appreciated.
Regards
Paul

Possibly Captain John Ambrose Fisk born c 1838 Blundeston, Suffolk (near Lowestoft?)according to the 1911 census.
Looks like he also lived in Great Yarmouth at one time, couple of references to him being a Captain in the newspapers, he died 14th August 1916.

Hi Cathy,
It could possibly be him as his occupation on census records is master mariner and Blundeston is very near to Lowestoft.
Kind Regards

A good find Cathy.
John Ambrose’ will shows that he was living in Gorleston. Probate went to James Arnold Rivett and Thomas Joseph Darnell. Do these names mean anything to you?

Captain JA Fisk was my maternal grandmother's uncle. I have done a short study (a dozen pages)of him which I could make available. He was presented with a gold watch by his employer WT Henley in 1871 for cable laying services. He was captain of the SS L Plata.
Interesting that you have his telescope. I've always wondered the whereabouts of his sea chest and its contents.
Mail me if you want a copy of the study.
