Pablo1,

You could consider donating your (obviously copious) research scribble diaries in to the safe custody of PRONI/UHF/NIFHS?

Perhaps not Sentry Hill.
[We've just learnt that "Mr. McKINNEY" (aka Wesley BONAR), having been on furlough for a long time while the venue was closed to the public, has accepted an offer to "retire" from his long role there. Sad, sad, sad.

Capt. Jock, if my handwriting was somewhat decent, I would do so.  However, even though I wrote down the material, I have a difficult time to decipher it myself   As such, I am hoping that this website won't mind me putting various genealogical information onto this forum.  After retirement, I was going to enjoy this hobby, but my wife had a stroke and passed away last June.  Since then I unfortunately have lost much interest.  My only wish right now is to clean up the genealogical mess that I have made.  I don't wish to leave it for others to have to worry about.

Pablo1,

Sorry to hear of your sad loss, such must have been devastating.
[We've lost a great aunt, then our Dad, then an aunt, and now Dad's cousin in Canada.
Quite a year.  Huge amounts of potential verbal knowledge lost forever.
You just had to sit them down together, turn on the recorder, and wait for the sparks!]

Genealogical mess?!!!
You are one of the most prolific/clear contributors to this conference.
Power to your elbow there in your transcription efforts Sir!
[Quote: Gustav MAHLER "Men will have to work a long time at cracking the nuts that I’m shaking down from the tree for them."]

Scribbles from hectic/strenuous/inspired scenarios are always much to be appreciated.
[c.f. H. Rider HAGGARD (correspondent during the Zulu Wars, involving many Ulster men).
Later, super-inspired while writing his famous novel "She":
"It came faster than my poor aching hand could set it down."
Those of us who have struggled (physically/optically) with the Tenison GROVES archives in Belfast,
and the "tombstones" (Will/Deed extracts in Dublin) know the worth of an occasional twiddle of the pen ...]

Much can be learned from scribble diaries.

When the great Mathematical Geometer Bernard RIEMANN (founder of the generic construction that underlies the formulation of General Relativity by Albert EINSTEIN) died, his colleagues scarpered round to his house a.s.a.p. just managing to stop his house-keeper from throwing all his "scrap" papers on the fire in her attempt to make the place tidy for visits by mourners.

Much (though not all) of his unpublished work was saved, some with tentative embryonic new ideas, others with emphatically proved rejections of useless avenues to follow, etc.
Also there were essential lessons to be learnt by his approach to problems/proofs.

The ethos of the time was that formally unpublished material was NOT to be made public.
Such idea was reputation driven, perhaps hinting that the author was somehow less than super-human.

This idea is likely to derive from the motto of his great mentor
(the last Poly-Math) Carl Friedrich GAUSS's:
"Pauca sed Matura"   [Trans. "Few but Ripe"]

I encountered a choir outside our small ancient church one day recently.
Engaging with them, I mentioned that I had also been a chorister once.
Their immediate response:
"What do you mean once?  Once a chorister, always a chorister!"

[I asked them what they had been singing - oratorios by BRUCKNER.
So, I gave them my rendition of the start of his 7th Symphony.
In my view, the most beautiful/inspiring opening to any work of music.]

Think that same applies to family history researchers.
"Once a genealogist, always a genealogist!"

Keep your pecker up, and let us know what help you need anytime.

Capt. Jock

P.S. Very interested in the 1896 Francis TURNLY marriage, but perhaps best broached with you separately, through some separate scribbles.

Oh, Captain my Captain our fearful trip is not yet done...Dear Captain Jock, thank you very much for your kind words and positive quotes.  I really do apologize for the various posts that I am making, but I really do hope that some information that I had previously run across will be of some use to another.  As far as Francis Turnly is concerned, I am sure that I have additional information in one of my notebooks.  We will surely be coming round to him at some point.

Francis J. S. Turnley m. March 14,1896 to Hessie M. M. Higginson at Layde CI

The Cottage, the property of Francis Turnley is a neat little two story house with a flat roof.  It is situated on a hill close to the northern side of Cushendall.  Mr. T. Seldon resides there.

A house called The Cottage was once owned by Maj. Archibald Macaulay of the Glenville, Cushendall Macaulays.  It would be my guess that these two houses are the same.

Some Macaulays in Co. Antrim

From the book "The Avenged Bride, a Tale of the Glens" by Alexander Markham
"In Glendun stood the castle of Hugh Macaulay, Esq., known as Hugh of the Glyns.  His
fortress was called Lisavalla."

Judge Alexander Macaulay purchased vast property in the Glens, including the Glenane estate from Groame Macaulay, said to have been by the Rev. Alexander Macaulay. a grandson of the judge,  no relation to the judge.

"An Unknown Country" by Dinah Craik
"Some generations ago, a McAulay of Glenville, the richest man in all the seven glens of Antrim, dared to cut down the sacred oak.  But in spite of this, it did not die..."

Thanks for putting in the effort to transcribe and post Pablo.  This is the sort of useful information that a Google search will sometimes bring up when one is stuck.

I just now opened Rootschat and found your stack of messages Pablo/ Paul, and am as always so impressed by the depth and breadth of your knowledge of county Antrim. I'm sorry to hear that you are moving on from genealogy. We have been in touch many times over the years, and I was thinking of you not long ago, maybe in January 2021 as i looked at the Dobbs Report and I thought you would likely have it digested and figured out! Also very sorry to hear of the loss of your wife. It has been an awful year of loss, we can hope for a better time, but that doesn't bring folk back. Families and family history go on, and you are providing the community with a great treasure store. Hope it continues to be available here. And you could deposit your notebooks somewhere, so much research and energy shouldn't just get thrown away

LindeL, thank you for putting up with me for such a long time.  I am not really moving on from genealogy.  I am just trying to get my notes on line to see if they will be of help to other researchers. Also, as I live in Japan by myself now, I don't wish to cause my family trouble by having to come over from the States and go through a massive amount of paper if anything should befall me.  As I soon retired after my wife suffered her cerebral hemorrhage, this is kind of now my current occupation.  I am very thankful for your comments.  With very best wishes, Paul.

I would imagine that this would be the same Austin Macauley as the birthdates do match up quite nicely.  My guess is that he shied away from answering truthfully the question about his religion because of him being born into a prominent  Catholic family and feeling that the question of what religion one belonged to was one of a private nature.   And Kiltaglassan, many thanks for all of the hard additional work that you are putting into this.  With best regards, Paul (Pablo1)
