Title: Ireland to Downunder
Post by: Chucky_60 on Sunday 18 April 21 02:15 BST (UK)
Hi folks

I'm trying to find any record of the following ancestors who left for Australia in the mid 1850's.

I have immigrant passenger lists on the David McIver but was hoping to find records of births etc before they left.

Names are :
James Smith/Smyth born about 1831 Newtonhamilton, Armagh, died 1879 Sydney, Australia
Father John & mother Susannah

Sarah Ann Adamson born about 1831 Tullylish, Northern Ireland?, died 1907 Sydney, Australia
Father Thomas & mother Ann Jane McDoughall.

Thank you

Chucky

The passenger list shows James as Church of England and Sarah as Church of Scotland.

Are you aware that Sarah Ann Adamson’s parents and numerous siblings emigrated to NSW in 1855 on board “NABOB”? Quite a lot of family detail on their passenger lists.

Added: Sarah Ann also had a brother and 2 sisters already in NSW before her, and a brother George on the same ship as she was on.

Good afternoon

Well that just goes to show I have no idea what I'm doing. He's me thinking I'm posting on a board in Ireland and you two pop up. :)

To quote a very old a sexiest remark "anyone would think I was a blonde" but no just an oldish, going grey guy. :)

Thanks Neale1961, yes I have the passenger lists, probably the best ones I have found for info. I was hoping to find birth or baptism records back in Ireland.

The Irish are still asleep at the moment - they will be along later.
I think there are not many records for early Irish baptisms online, especially non-Roman Catholic.
By the way, I’m blonde! :D

Sarah Ann Adamson was from Ballymacanallen, Tullylish, Down.
James Smith was from Newtownhamilton, Armagh.

1850's Potato Famine, many Irish sailed to America, Australia and other places. My late wife's descendants were Kendrigan, they came to OZ from Galway around 1850.

I was hoping to find birth or baptism records back in Ireland.

Birth registrations began 1864 in Ireland. Registration of marriages except those which happened in Catholic churches began 1845. Registration of marriages in R.C. churches began 1864. Death registrations began 1864.

Many Church of Ireland registers were destroyed a century ago during the Irish Civil War. Copies of some exist.

Sarah Ann Adamson born about 1831 Tullylish, Northern Ireland?

The state called Northern Ireland was founded 100 years ago when Ireland was partitioned. Ireland consists of 4 provinces. Ulster, the northerly province contains 9 counties. 6 Ulster counties formed Northern Ireland. Sarah Ann was born about 90 years before Northern Ireland was born.
Information about records for Northern Ireland is under "Genealogy" tab on Irish Genealogy Toolkit.
