WW2 service records are still with the MoD

There is a cost of £30 to apply for his records from the MOD.

Hello Jebber.
I went down that avenue and duly sent off my £30 at the beginning of Feb but have heard nothing back. I believe they are still closed and when they return there will be a huge backlog

There is always a long wait, extended at the moment because Covid has slowed things up considerably. Their main responsibility is to serving personnel, veterans, their widows and widowers, applications for family history are bottom of the list. Be prepared to wait months.

Hi Ken,
My husband sent for his late father's Service Record in February. Like you not heard anything to date and don't expect to for some months yet.
We will all have to be patient.

I have heard it is taking about a year at the moment. Eitrher send a Postal Order or an undated cheque as if the cheque is dated it only lasts six months - so they return it and you go to the back of the (long) queue!

There is a way of estimating his likely enlistment date. His Regimental Number was issued from a range allocated to the Royal Scots so if you can find someone who has a number near it and their enlistment date you can estimate when your soldier enlisted.
Did he serve in Burma with 1st Bn Royal Scots?

Thanks for your advice Skoyen89 but I didn't give it a thought and dated my cheque back in February,
Oh well nothing I can do about it now will just have to wait and see what happens,

not sure what you have found out but your James George Williams was killed during the 1st Arakan Campaign.1942/43. The Royal Scots were attached to the 6th brigade of the 2nd British Division. The campaign was a disaster from start to finish and ended with a general withdrawal
