Title: Royal Navy or Merchant
Post by: Ramshawlass on Tuesday 13 April 21 13:51 BST (UK)
I know this isn’t a very good photo but can anyone tell me if it’s a Royal Navy or Merchant or in fact Merchant Reserve. I’ve been trying to find out about my dads naval record during 39-45 but not sure if I can without writing for his war records. I know how long this takes after receiving my uncles war records while in the Marines. Also are there any records on the ATS, or would they not be released. Any information would be gratefully received. Thank you everyone.

Welcome to Rootschat  :D

Quite difficult as the picture is somewhat poor.  I found the below - is it anything like this?  Petty Officer Royal Navy.

Thanks for the welcome, it takes some getting used to and I keep getting things wrong. I’ve posted dads photo it might help a bit more than the last one. I’m trying to find his war record but I don’t know wether he was in the Royal Navy or Merchant Navy and there was a reserve as well. It’s for a local historian but I haven’t got his number either so I don’t know wether it’s worth paying £30 and asking Navy Command Headquarters in Portsmouth. I’ll check your photo now against his. Thanks for your help.

Are you willing to give his name, date of birth and place of birth? Might be able to find something using those.

Looks like Petty Officer RN or depending on his trade and era he could be a Leading Hand. Badge is Kings Crown so could be dated pre or post WW2. The uniform doesn't give any other clues.
Regards
Hugh

He was born 1921 and must have joined near where he lived in Cheshire. Its so annoying as I can remember him having this kind of record/ diary that had his number in and the ships he was on but no one seems to know where it went. So many questions I want to ask him 🙈
Thanks for your help I really do appreciate it.

I'm not coming up with anything military wise.  Do you subscribe to Ancestry?

Apparently he appears in seven trees on there.  I don't know if any of them are yours?

I can't look at them as I don't have a sub to Ancestry.

Hi,
Yes I’m on Ancestry and there’s nothing on there. Thanks for looking though.

You may end up having to get his records from the Ministry of Defence.  His service number is not absolutely necessary.  As long as you can provide a copy of his death certificate and as much as you know, they should be able to find his records.

Thank you for that. I’ll give it a try.

Please note that it has to be an actual copy of the death certificate not a photocopy.  I sent for my late father-in-law's records and I remember that about the death certificate.

I would agree with Hugh. RN cap badges show a fouled anchor, ie an anchor with a chain. MN cap badges do not.
I checked the limited online MN records for him. Nothing at all.
You need to get hold of his RN service records. Available from the MOD
