Title: Deciphering cursive document from 1897 - Regarding leasing of farm equipment
Post by: shawd on Friday 09 April 21 16:04 BST (UK)
Hello,

I am trying to transcribe a document that my father found in our family farmhouse from 1897.  It is an agreement between a gentleman and my GG Grandfather and his brother regarding the let of animal and farm equipment.

I can read most of it, but there is a section that I am having trouble with that I have attached.  I'd appreciate confirmation that what I have is correct and any suggestions on what might be written where I have noted [unintelligible].

My best attempt was:
The party of the first part also lets the parties of the second part the following property, personal & real, one wood mower, one Hollingsworth rake, one breaking plow, one stirring plow, one 3 ¼ in Mitchell Wagon, one Studabaker four seated [unintelligible] & Ranch & [unintelligible - is this implements?].  The parties of the second part agree to pay the party of the first part one hundred & fifty dollars per annum as rental for ranch farming implements, horses, cattle, etc.

There's one additional part of the document I'm having trouble with.

I think it says:
It is further agreed in addition to the above agreement that the party of the first shall furnish two (2) bucks for every one hundred in [unintelligible] one hundred ewes in said bands of sheep of 1530 sheep.

I don't think that it's "Ranch."  I think it's Rauch and refers to the Rauch and Lang Carriage Company but I can't make out the word Lang in there.

I'll look into that.  I assumed Ranch because John Kernaghan was a rancher by trade in Montana.

My twopen'th....I think it is 'Studebaker four seater buckboard D Rauch' not & [maybe a model type?].

Also 'for every one hundred or fractional hundred ewes'.

Wikipedia has

“ In the early 20th century, as horse-drawn vehicles were supplanted by the motor car, the term 'buckboard' was also used in reference to a passenger car (usually a 'tourer') from which the rear body had been removed and replaced with a load-carrying bed. These home-built dual-purpose passenger- and load-carrying vehicles were the precursors of the factory-built 'utility' or 'pickup truck'.”

So perhaps it is Rauch & improvments and that is what they have done to it.

Thank you everyone, that is all very helpful.  I'm sure I wouldn't have figured that out myself!
