I have asked the moderator to move your post to the Staffs board.  Betley is in Staffs

He was Moses - not Mosses

I cannot find a birth record for Moses around 1812, as his eldest son was Moses it is possible his own father was Moses also, maybe the one below?

Moses Whitmore baptism 10 Dec 1775 Wybunbury, Cheshire (3miles from Betley)
Father Thomas

GRO records for the children on the 1861 census, (Hannah is Ann on 1851) states the mother as Edwards, so I assume that there was an earlier marriage for Maria?

WHITMORE, MOSES       EDWARDS
GRO Reference: 1841  D Quarter in STOKE UPON TRENT  Volume 17  Page 145

WHITMORE, HANNAH       EDWARDS
GRO Reference: 1846  D Quarter in STOKE UPON TRENT  Volume 17  Page 180

WHITMORE, SARAH       EDWARDS
GRO Reference: 1850  D Quarter in STOKE UPON TRENT  Volume 17  Page 177

witnesses to the 1836 marriage were John Jones & Sarah Edwards.

Possible baptism in Longton 4 June 1809 Maria, daughter of William & Ann Edwards.

Looks like a connection for the Whitmore surname to Wybunbury;

Marriage;
18 Nov 1807, St Margaret, Betley, Staffs
Geo. WHITMORE to Mary HITCHEN
George of Wibunbury

F/S has a possible Bapt for George 17 September 1780 Wybunbury, Cheshire, Father THOMAS

Cant see him on Census though to confirm pob/dob

Thanks for your PM.

Ok I see Moses/Maria were witnesses to the marriage of Henry Whitmore 1840
(Father Abraham and a widower)
Henry was buried 05 Jun 1876 age 63

Abraham married Maria HALL 05 Aug 1811

Sorry still cant see any one line bapt for Henry or Moses with a Father Abraham.

the marriage was in Stoke upon Trent by licence. Witnesses James Poulson & Isaac Hall. The licence is online and shows Abraham to be at least 21 and a wheelwright, Isaac Hall a bricklayer.

1851 census
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGLB-Q1J

Abraham's birth place is most likely meant to be Wybunbury, it's not very clear on the census. And yes, the place of birth for grandson Thomas is France.

Daughter Ann was baptised 12 Feb 1832 in Hanley. There are other baptisms to the couple

Maria born 30 April 1815 baptised in Wesleyan Methodist Church Newcastle under Lyme 29 May Abraham, wheelwright and living in Woolstanton
George bp 1 Aug 1819 in St Peter ad Vincula, Stoke Abraham wheelwright living in Shelton.

1851 for Henry Whitmore also shown as born Betley
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:SGLB-SLX

It could be that Moses and Henry were baptised in a Methodist church whose records are not online.

By the way, it's much easier if you reply on your post rather than by pm as it keeps all the info in one place and where everyone can see and possibly offer help.

just checked Genuki for Betley, it was rather small but did have a Methodist Church

https://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/STS/Betley

https://www.mymethodisthistory.org.uk/chapels/staffordshire/betley-methodist-chapel-staffordshire

You can get a free pdf from Staffordshire Record Office for details of what non-conformist records they hold
