Title: William S GIBB proving elusive to find
Post by: sage on Monday 05 April 21 07:37 BST (UK)
Hi Rootschatters,
William Sandilands GIBB is my Easter project only I'm not having much success finding him beyond 1935. Born 23 Aug 1896 in Wishaw, Lanarkshire, one of 8 children born to James Inglis GIBB & Jeanie Scott SANDILANDS, he emigrated to Australia with his parents and 4 siblings (not sure when) and appears on the electoral roll in Coogee, New South Wales in 1931, 1933, 1934 & 1935 as a labourer. His mother died in 1934 and when his sister died in 1941 her death notice reads, "Beloved daughter of James Gibb & sister of Agnes & Jim" per Sydney Morning Herald dated 05 May 1941. William didn't get a mention! He had siblings back in Scotland and England but they were not mentioned in family death notices published in Australia either so I suppose it is possible he travelled back to his homeland between 1935 & 1941 as I haven't been able to find a death for him in NSW.
I have found corresponding death records for his parents and siblings but can't seem to be able to track William down. I'm hoping someone can point me in the right direction.
With thanks,
Sage

There is a William Gibb, mothers maiden name, Sandilands, who dies in Kilmarnock, Scotland in 1984.
His age 82, is not quite right, but close. Have a look at this possible one on Scotlands People.

Thank you for the tip but that one looks like the son of Wm Gibb & Margaret/Maggie Sandilands who married in 1894 Lesmahagow. Six years is probably a bit of a stretch to risk six credits  ;D

There is a grave for a William S Gibb in Bothwell Park Cemetery, Bellshill died 21 August 1945, but without an age to help verify. https://billiongraves.com/grave/William-S-Gibb/29755821.

Anything mentioned in his dad's death notice?

GIBB   James Ingles   Death notice   16SEP1947   Death   83   late of Wishaw, Lanarkshire, Scotland   Sydney Morning Herald   18SEP1947

His death was mentioned in local Wishaw newspaper of time, but no family details other than mention of his late wife and that her father had been a baker in Wishaw.

Re when family headed to Australia....not sure if this will link in somewhere, but in March 1921, relatives and friends of a Mr James Gibb jnr held a social gathering at Sandilands Hall, Wishaw and an Archibald Gibb presented him with a well filled wallet of  Treasury notes for his leaving to go to Australia.

James' death was reported in the Sydney Morning Herald but scant on details...just late of Wishaw, Lanarkshire and father of Agnes and James aged 83.

Then in 1926, a church social was held  in December at Wishaw Parish Church hall, to bid farewell to Mr James Gibb, Mrs Gibb and Miss Jessie Gibb who were leaving the following week for Australia. The family were presented with various leaving gifts.

Perhaps the family emigrated at different stages?

Jessie's death of  3rd, May, 1941, noted in local Wishaw press, but only parents mentioned.

No death of a William Gibb in Bothwell in 1945.

William Stark Gibb, 40, died in Bothwell in 1943, aged 40. I think that is a 3 not a 5 on the stone.

No other deaths of William Gibbs in Bothwell 1940-1950.

A long article in September 1928 on late Mrs Alexander Gibb who had been almost a Centenarian. Mentions a son James Gibb in Australia

Follow up to reply #5. When that James Gibb jnr and some other folks from Wishaw arrived in Australia, he was welcomed at party held by 'former Wishawtonians'. He was apparently son of a James Gibb and had travelled on 'the Berrina'.

Thank you ScotMum...some great pointers. I have found the shipping record for James snr, Jeanie and Jessie aboard SS Balranald departing for Australia 23 Dec 1926...confirmation of address in Wishaw as 37 Bute Cres, Belhaven Rd.
Haven't found James jnr but will keep looking in 1921. I still need to find Catherine, William and Agnes. I did assume they would all come out together but I was way out on that one! I've also searched UK incoming for William but I'm not sure he made it back to his homeland. I have to keep an open mind on that.

The article in 1928 pertaining to an Alexander Gibb is not applicable to this family that I know of.

To help narrow down James jnr's arrival, others from Wishaw who travelled on same boat were a Mr and Mrs Archie Newlands and an E Downs.

Ok,  found Archibald Newlands and family and E Downs listed beside them - 10th March 1921 departure from London, boat Berrima rather than Berrina.

Thanks...I have found that passenger list. Jim is recorded as J R Gibb and I'm not sure that he had a second name but the family were in the habit of calling him James jnr. He arrived Sydney aboard SS Berrima 30 Apr 1921...I wouldn't have found him without your help  :)

Did you mean James D rather tha James R?

I found

James D
Last name   Gibbs
Gender   Male
Age   21
Birth year   1900
Occupation   Engineer

and his address was 37 Belhaven Road, Bute Crescent, Wishaw.

For consideration given James was noted as an Engineer:

First name(s)   William
Last name   Gibb
Gender   Male
Age   26
Birth year   1897
Occupation   Engineer
Departure year   1923
Departure day   1
Departure month   6
Departure port   London

albeit with a Greenock address.

Jim jnr shared his father's name born James Inglis Gibb in 1900, Cambusnethan. The 'r' and the 'd' must have been interpretations of what was said or written.

I'm not sure that's a match for William travelling to Australia aboard SS Jervis Bay. He was contracted to land in Melbourne not Sydney, arriving Brisbane 13 Jul 1923. I'll keep my options open on this one. Thanks again...its great to bounce theories off fellow Rootschatters.

You may already have:

GIBB.-April 16, 1933, at 4 Brook Street, Coogee, Catherine (Cathie), dearly beloved  daughter of James and Jeanie Gibb, aged 48 years; late of Wishaw, Lanarkshire, Scotland

The Bothwell Cemetery headstone for Wm Gibb is probably a memorial to someone lost in WWII? I have checked the 1945 deaths on S/P for Wm Gibb and none of the entries match the correct age for Wm Gibb born 1896. Closest would be the 1946 death aged 51 Newton Mearns.

I found Agnes Gibb aged 26 of 27 Belhaven Rd Wishaw aboard SS Largs Bay bound for Sydney, Australia departing London 30 Oct 1923. She may have been funded via a program encouraging domestic staff to Australia as all the other women aboard were listed with occupation 'domestic'.

I believe Wm Gibb travelled aboard SS Oronsay, arriving Fremantle from London 03 Mar 1930. No mention of his occupation and he was bound for Canterbury Rd Punchbowl, Sydney. His brother John lived in Punchbowl per the 1930 electoral roll. Had Wm been in Australia before 1930 he would have appeared on the electoral earlier than his first appearance in 1931 having been born in 1896 and of an age to vote in 1917 so I think this is a likely match for him.

See my reply #8 above.

The date on that stone has been incorrectly transcribed.

Unfortunately, no mention of her siblings when Annie died in Wishaw in 1956.

This article published South Australia Police Gazette dated 14 Aug 1935 caught my eye:

WARRANTS Issued...ADELAIDE - warrants of commitment have been issued for William GIBBS described as native of NSW, labourer, born 1896, 6 ft high, medium build, dark complexion and hair, brown eyes; for non-payment of fines and costs on charges of drunkenness at Adelaide on 25th and 26th July 1935.

::) shows how desperate I am but I feel like William has gone AWOL! I don't like the fact the surname is spelt GIBBS but it's possibly a lead.
