Title: Parents of James Morrison who married Jean Colville 1818 Glasgow?
Post by: squawki11 on Saturday 03 April 21 14:52 BST (UK)
I wonder if anybody could point me in the right direction to find the parents of James Morrison, please? He & Jean had at least 7 recorded children between 1820 & 1832. Jean is recorded as dying in 1837, aged 36, in Glasgow. All their children were recorded as born/baptised in Gorbals/Glasgow and it seems reasonable to me that James & Jean were also born thereabouts...If I knew James' parents, I might be able to discern his siblings, if any. I've scoured the census returns and not until 1861 do I find details of one of James' & Jean's children, Alexander, coal miner living in Wishaw with family & mother in law. Any ideas much appreciated.

I wonder if this is James in 1841, I note possible deaths for Jean in Glasgow?

Old Vennal, Glasgow
MORRISON   James   M   40   Plasterer   LKS
MORRISON   David   M   15      LKS
MORRISON   Alexander   M   11      LKS

There is a possible death for James before 1851.

I note their marriage in 1818 and their 7 children, the eldest being James in 1820, followed by the first William Smith Morrison, I assume he died before the second of that name in 1826. Given these names I would guess the following records on SP might be worth considering?

MORISON   JAMES   JAMES MORISON/CATHRINE HENDERSON    17/10/1798   Glasgow
MORISON   JAMES   JAMES MORISON/JEAN GRAY               15/12/1800   Glasgow
MORISON   JAMES   JOHN MORISON/JEAN BRASH               27/01/1801   Glasgow

Many thanks for your help, Colin. That 1841 census you found with James a Plasterer aligns with his marriage record! Maybe one of these days I'll be able to browse the records at a SP centre! There are suggestions James was born in Fife but I had to wonder about that. It might still be the case but I'd need some verification before blind acceptance.
