Title: Barnhill Poorhouse John Nelson or Neilson
Post by: still lookin on Saturday 03 April 21 11:48 BST (UK)
Hello from Australia

I am looking for wee help!
I have a John Nelson  whom I believe I have the right one. I have John Nelson death cert he died 1869 at Barnhill Poorhouse. He was 49yrs old b 1820. He was formally a soldier. This maybe the lost Grandfather I am looking for.  If this is the same man he was in India 74th Regt. Born in Paisley where joined the Regt. in 1842. His wife Margaret nee Renwick died in 1866 in India. In the 1871 census 2 of his kids were with the Finlay family , I have no idea if they are connected.  Any information from the Barnhill Workhouse will be great.

Thank you

The Mitchell Library would be the best place for the records for Barnhill Poor House unfortunately they are closed because of the covid .. Once they are allowed to open up you could always e-mail them and see if they can help ..

Have you reviewed Barnhill Poorhouse
at http://www.workhouses.org.uk/Barony/
lot of links here..

There is also a John Nelson   listed on Royal Hospital Chelsea Pensioner Admissions and Discharges, 1715-1925.. but details on regiment are not 74th..
Name: John Nelson
Pension Admission or Examination Age:    47
Birth Year:  abt 1820
Birth Place:  Paisley, Renfrew
Pension Admission or Examination Date: 30 Jul 1867
Regiment: 108th Foot
Rank: P.
Regimental Number:    896

If you have discharge papers might be worthwhile posting his Regiment No and any other details.. be sure to check both sides as back usually contains some details on where they were going to on discharge.. as they could claim expenses..

Hi Mark

I  also have the same guy u mentioned coming out of Netley Hospital. I have some docs when he was discharged from the 74th 108th Regiment. Due to him being unfit with chest pains. My question is .. Is this the same guy who died 1869?? Mayby the answer lies with in Barnhill ?

Cheers

Tony

If you can get his army records .. that is usually a good source of details... birth.. service etc...
which you can use to find out more biographical details..

All the best
