Title: Oak Buildings, Oak Road, Redcar
Post by: brightmount on Monday 29 March 21 12:03 BST (UK)
I've discovered my grandmother was a "General Dealer" and her business premises was at Oak Buildings, Oak Road, Redcar. I presume this was a shop.

This was in the 1930s, because sadly in 1937 she was made bankrupt.

I was wondering if anyone has any information on this address in the 1930s, maybe from a trade directory, or if luck is on my side, a photo from the period?

My grandmother's name was Rachel Colley.

Not sure whether you're familiar with the area at all.... Oak Road is currently a largely residential road, the only shop currently in that road is Oak Road Motor Factors which is number 45 and is on the corner of Oak Road and Walnut Grove. I'll see if I can find out if there have ever been any other shops on Oak Road. I think you'd be very lucky to find any photos of Oak Road, most old photos of Redcar are of the beach and esplanade or the High Street.

Further to my previous reply, a friend tells me that in addition to the two shops currently occupied by Oak Road Motor Factors there used to be one opposite which she said was a corner shop type. Also, if you use Facebook there's apparently a page called Redcar Memories where people post old photos so you might be lucky with that or even find someone who has more information about the shop you're researching. I don't use FB so unfortunately I can't help you with that.

Good luck.  :)
