Title: Body (Boddy) Family in England
Post by: hnb13 on Saturday 27 March 21 04:50 GMT (UK)
Hello,
I am looking for my ancestors who immigrated from England to Australia.
My gt grandfather was John Body born 1850 in London area and migrated to Australia, died 1919 in Melbourne Australia. He married a Mary Smith in Melbourne Australia in 1881.

His father was also a John Body b 1819 d unknown. Occupation believed to be a tailor. He married Ann Holland (1818-1905) in Lambeth England.

My 3rd gt Grandfather is believed to be William Body but this is unsubstantiated ( b&d unknown)

I have no knowledge of English ancestors.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated
regards
Harold (hnb13)

Hello Harold
On the parish record of the marriage (30 Oct 1843, Lambeth) of John Body and Ann Holland, John is recorded as a tailor, and his father is William Body, a chemist. Ann’s father is Thomas Holland, a coal merchant.

The 1851 Lambeth census shows John Body age 32 born Lambeth Surrey –journeyman tailor, Ann Body age 32 born Sydenham Kent, and children: John age 6 born Clerkenwell, William age 4 born Greenwich, Thomas age 2 born Lambeth.

There is a possible baptism for John Body on 16 Aug 1818 (born 17 July) at St Mary Newington. Parents names William (Grocer) and Ann Body  – address Gray’s Walk, Lambeth.

Is there any reason that you have posted your question on the Irish forum?

There is a possible baptism for John Body on 16 Aug 1818 (born 17 July) at St Mary Newington. Parents names William (Grocer) and Ann Body  – address Gray’s Walk, Lambeth

A possible marriage for William Body and Ann Grey - 18 Feb 1811 St James, Piccadilly Westminister (both recorded “of this parish”).

I think the William Body probably died early, as I cannot find him in census.
There is a possible burial for William Body (age 55) at St Mary, Lambeth on 18 Jan 1837(workhouse death). – so born abt 1783.

In the 1851 census (St Giles Cripplegate) I can see Ann Body (widow) laundress age 61, daughter Mary Ann Body age 41 – dressmaker; son James Body age 34 – working pharmacist; son George Body age 18 – gold cutter; William Body age 36 – wharehouse man; Sarah Body age 33 – wife of William, Frederick W Body age 2 – assumed son of Sarah and Wm?

James Body born 1816 - son for William and Ann Body (brother to your John)
Is in1861 census (Manchester), age 44, working as a druggists assistant; married to Matilda Mortimer with Children James, Caroline Ann, Mary Ann.

John Body (tailor) is in 1881 and 1891 census living St Martin in the Fields, rego district, The Strand.

There is a death registration 1896 (april quarter) Strand, London for John Body age 77.

Do you know when your Gt grandfather John Body emigrated to Australia?

John, I assume, would have emigrated to Australia before 1881 as he married in Melbourne in Oct 1881 to Mary Smith originally from Tasmania

If your family is John BODY who married Ann HOLLAND on 30 Oct 1843, their son John has birth registered Sep qtr 1844 at St James Clerkenwell. Father John was a tailor - they are reasonably easy to find on the census records.

On the marriage of John and Ann, it has his father as William BODY (chemist) and her's Thomas HOLLAND (coal merchant).

Interesting baptisms

William Body - an adult of the parish of St Giles Cripplegate baptised on 28 Jan 1835 at Lothbury Independent. His daughter Jane born 4 May 1829 was baptised on the same day at same place. Jane married Charles Dilnot Hobbs on 15 June 1856 at St Jude Islington. George Body was a witness. William's occupation was warehouseman on marriage record.

The problem with getting back any further is that we don't know where William was born, only that he wasn't born in Middlesex

Yes Lizzie, I think you have the correct death for William.
I see now that the family were in st Giles Cripplegate at least as early as 1832, when George was born.

The Body family have another link to Australia through Jane Body (b. 1829) who married Charles Dilnot Hobbs in 1856. They were in New South Wales and had 4 children born there.
•   Richard F Hobbs born & died 1857 Sydney
•   Charles G Hobbs born 1858 Kingston NSW
•   William J Hobbs born 1860 Kingston NSW
•   Mary J Hobbs born 1862 Kingston NSW
The family then return to England and Charles Dilnot Hobbs re-married in 1868 to Esther Tuck and goes on to have about 8 more children. I don’t know when Jane, his first wife died – could not see a death in NSW.

Hello again, can someone please advise when the spelling of Body changed to Boddy, appears to have happened in Australia. There are two distinct families in England with the two variants of the spelling, it could cause unnecessary research if the wrong family spelling is selected.
Some of my BDM cert's show Boddy where other cert's show Body. My family uses Boddy in Australia but my ancestors in England used Body, could it just be a case of phonetic spelling?

Spellings were not consistant until c.1900 so treat Body and Boddy (+ variants) as potentially the same family before then.

The Agricultural Revolution forced unemployed country labourers to move to the cities so your C19th Bodys probably moved there from elsewhere to seek work. I have no idea if they are connected but there was a family of Bodys just west of London in South Buckinghamshire who go back several hundred years b4 1800.
