This man was born in 1854 in Shetland to a Laurence Smith and Anderina Yonson/Eunson. It appears there is a Thomas Smith shown in Hulme and wondering if anyone can spot spot him.
There are many Laurence/Lawrence Smiths b. in Shetland so need to see if this is the correct man.
How would I go about getting a marriage certificate for this man? Would it show his mother and father?

Marriage certificates from England/Wales don't show mothers - only fathers.
Possibility from FreeBMD.org.uk:
September qtr 1876
Chorlton Registration Districtt
Thomas Smith
+and, on the same page +
Mary Wood
LancashireBMD.org.uk shows they married at Hulme, St Paul.

Hulme is actually a district of Manchester .

I have updated my reply:

Marriage 2 Jul 1876 Hulme shows that Thomas was 26 and his father was Lawrence Smith a cooper.
Mary was 26 and her father was Ralph Wood a joiner.
-
In 1881 Thomas is back with his parents as a widower so Mary must have died soon after marriage.
Possible death in Sep 1876 age 27.
