Title: Location Help please
Post by: JosiahS on Sunday 21 March 21 18:38 GMT (UK)
Hello there

Could someone with a close knowledge of Cheshire please take a look at where Martha Crosby was born on this section from the 1851 census.  She was living in Chester.  I can't find anything like Tunstill or Funstill in the county.

Many thanks in advance

I'd agree it does say 'Tunstill', but I can't find anywhere with that name in Cheshire.

There is a 'Tunstall" in North Staffordshire, not many miles east of the Cheshire border - about 30 miles to Chester itself.
Perhaps she was unsure of the county, or the enumerator didn't bother to check.

Unfortunately you have put the red box through the birth place given for her daughter, so we can't factor that clue into the question - does it say 'St Mary's', the same as her granddaughter?
Intriguing that her grandson was born 'over the seas', and is a BS (British Subject).
For future reference, there is no need to highlight a word or words you need help with. Just an explanation of which ones would suffice. As I say, it does mean a loss of possible clues that might help.

It only rang a bell with me as I had ancestors in Cheshire for many generations, then lost them, eventually finding they had originally hopped north over the Cheshire border from Tunstall in Staffordshire.

Many thanks for the advice.

When Martha married her husband in Chester in 1808 she was a widow of the name Evans.  The witnesses were Joseph Kendrick and Jane Jones.  If I do a search for someone named Evans marrying someone called Martha it throws up a Daniel Evans marrying a Martha Kendrick in January 1805.  There was a child to the couple baptised September 1805 - William Evans - and no more, but I cannot find a burial for Daniel.  He appears to be the one born 1772 in Dodleston, and there was a Martha Kendrick born in the same parish in 1782 which would be about the right age.

Martha and Willliam Crosby had Mary 1809, Catherine 1811, (presumably one of these was the mother of the King children), John 1813, Thomas 1815, Ann 1819, Charles 1822, Samuel 1825 and Elizabeth 1828.  I have not yet gone through the burials to see if there were any unbaptised children. All the children were born in Chester and baptised at St Mary-on-the-hill.

I hope the additional information might help.

I think this is her baptism:-

Marthar Kendrick
Baptism: 5 Feb 1786   -
Place: Tilston
Father: John Kendrick
Mother: Catharine Simcot

Hi David

So Tilston rather than Tunstill!  I suppose it could be a transcriber error, and the names of the children would support the parents' names.

Thank you - I'll dig around a bit further.

I didn't look at the image to see the full description, which is:-

5th baptised Marthar base daughter of Catharine Simcot pauper of Tilston and John Kendrick of St Mary Chester the supposed father.

John married Catherine on 21st May 1786 but her name is transcribed as Tinker. Looking at the surname, the 'T' could be an 'S'
There are some Sinkers in Tilston at the time and could be misinterpreted in speech or writing as Tinker or Simcot.

Joseph was baptised on 31st May in St Mary-on-the-Hill, Chester. Son of John, Needle Maker, by Catherine his wife.

Also Jane on 22 Aug 1787
Sarah on 7 Jul 1789
Catharine on 17 Feb 1793
Elizabeth on 11 Oct 1797
