Title: Grandma Clark
Post by: Neale1961 on Saturday 20 March 21 02:08 GMT (UK)
This is my Grandma Clark born 1894. She looks to be about 2 or 3 years old here. I would love for someone to give her a bit of a clean up please.
Does anyone else think those massive boots look ridiculous – surely too big for her to walk in! Would they have put her into great big boots to help her stand up, and be still for the photo?

One from me, I'm afraid that those boots were what the little ones had to wear in those days, no dainty shoes for them  ::)

She’s gorgeous Neale. Some of those children’s shoes used to have metal soles, a bit like horse shoes. I used to have a pair in my collection. Grandma’s shoes do look quite long on her, but I think they look lovely with the frilly dress.  :)

I think they look too long as well, Ruskie.
I wonder how, or if, she walked in them? Maybe she just stood still and looked sweet. :D

I wonder if the boots had buttons which needed a tool like this to do up?

I’m sure she would have walked in those boots - they wouldn’t just be for show.  :)

Thanks Ruskie, those were the tools I was imagining. Getting dressed in those times was not a quick activity!

Thanks, Carol. She certainly has. I think you, too, and all the restorers have done wonderfully well on this one. It's such a pleasure to work for a poster like Neal who always gives really good scans and really good thanks to us all.  :D

" Does anyone else think those massive boots look ridiculous – surely too big for her to walk in! Would they have put her into great big boots to help her stand up, and be still for the photo?"

It may not apply in this case, but when I was a kid, shoes were always bought bigger than

the size you needed. As kids can grow very quickly the saying was " he'll soon grow into them"

Same with clothes. Many clothes were also hand me downs.

Tomkin, Thanks so much for your version of Grandma in vibrant colours. I think it has a Christmas feel now. :)
You posted your restore yesterday, and somehow I missed seeing it, so apologies for not responding sooner.
