Title: Hill family Hawarden
Post by: Manor Farm on Friday 19 March 21 20:43 GMT (UK)
Hi,I am new to rootschat and I am looking for any information about the Hill family of Hawarden. My grandfather was Joseph and I believe he married his cousin Hannah and they lived in Bebington. They had one child, my father, also Joseph born 1909. Joseph senior died in 1910.

I note the records you mention. All registered in the Wirral'

Marriages Sep 1907
HILL    Joseph        Wirral    8a   957
Married Hannah Hill

HILL, JOSEPH    born   HILL
GRO Reference: 1909  M Quarter in WIRRAL  Volume 08A  Page 424

HILL, JOSEPH    died   32
GRO Reference: 1910  M Quarter in WIRRAL  Volume 08A  Page 287

If the Hawarden you refer to is the one in Flintshire I cannot see a birth record there for Joseph senior, or the Wirral or Lancashire  but plenty elsewhere.

Welcome to Rootschat  :D

As ColC has mentioned there only appears to be one birth of a Joseph Hill with a mother's maiden name of Hill.

Don't seem to be able to find Joseph on the 1911 census.  Did his mother remarry?

The image for the  marriage of Joseph and Hannah is on Find My Past, it says:-

Married on 10th July 1907 at Bebington.  Joseph age 28, labourer, dad James Hill deceased Farm labourer

Hannah age 20, dad Thomas Hill deceased, also a farm labourer.

So Hannah would have been born about 1887.

That 1911 looks good Cath.

Storeton is part of the Wirral registration district.  So where has his mother got to in the 1911?  Living elsewhere or remarried?

There seems to be a little inconsistency with ages. On his marriage certificate he states he is 28 which would give a birth year of 1878/79 and his occupation is labourer.  His father is James.  His military record is saying he was born in 1877 in Chester and his occupation was Seaman.

There is this birth record for 1877 in Chester.

HILL, JOSEPH       DAVISON
GRO Reference: 1877  D Quarter in CHESTER  Volume 08A  Page 448

This would tie up with the baptism that Suzard found in Reply#12

His wife's details on his military records match up with the marriage certificate.

Perhaps for some unknown reason he wished to appear younger on his marriage cert.  ::)

Yes, I saw the list of brothers on his military record and Suzard has them on the 1881 census.

Parent's marriage, although it is probably not needed

A huge thanks to everyone for your help.

I now know the parents of Joseph senior were James Hill and Mary (Maria) Davison/Davidson and the parents of Hannah were Thomas Hill and Sarah Burkey and that James and Thomas were brothers!
Such large families!
