Hi
I'm wondering would anyone have a link to identifying a pawnshop that may have existed on upper Gardiner st Dublin in the past (not to be confused with rafters which was on Lwr Gardiner st)
any help appreciated.

39 Upper Gardiner Street - there is a newspaper article about an application to open a pawn office at that address in 1883 and numerous newspaper references to it thereafter (into the 1920s at least), trading under the name of McGuinness.

The 1918 PO Dublin directory and calendar listing is: 39 McGuinness, Mrs. Ellen, pawnbroker. There are also a Mrs. McGuinness and a Charles J. McGuinness (electrical engineer) at no. 38, I haven't checked if related.

I have now, it's these folk at no. 38 in 1911, note Ellen's occupation:

And some employees living on the premises at no. 39:

The relevant house and building return at Form B.1. confirms that no. 38 was a Dwelling and no. 39 was a Pawn Office:

Dorset st to Gardiner st, the 3 balls hang over number 39(http://)

Yes, Upper Gardiner Street intersects at no. 28 Lower Dorset Street, those premises at no. 28 had (have?) a side door opening onto Upper Gardiner Street (at no. 42 in that street), I can see a newspaper reference to William Bushe at that address.

While stopped at the traffic lights at the junction of Dorset Street Lower and Gardiner Street Upper, heading north, glancing up to my right, I was greeted by the sight of the pawnbroker's symbol on the chimney on the rear of 38-39 Gardiner Street Upper.
