Title: Looking for help researching the history of my home....don't know where to start
Post by: cerip23 on Sunday 14 March 21 15:47 GMT (UK)
I live in an old Colliery village on the outskirts of Newcastle and want to research the history of our house, and our street....I dont know where to start and 1939 register is something I can search for on ancestry but not the address....

is there another way to research?

FindMyPast allows you to search the 1939 plus the earlier census by address

Findmypast also has a newspaper archive which you can search for street name to find out events in that street.

Try this

Leave everything blank apart from
put the area name in the 'lived in field' (e.g. Gosforth, Northumberland, England)

Put the street name in the 'Keyword field' (e.g. Something Road)

and hit enter

pick one of the results and hopefully, that will bringup people who were recorded in that street. From there you can browse through the pages to find the right number in the street

Newcastle Electoral Registers are also on Ancestry

It seems to allow you to search by street using a similar method, so if your village was covered by the Newcastle Electoral Registers that too may help. I'd class Throckley as the 'outskirts' and tried for a street I know of there.

I just left the name field blank, put the street name and type in the keyword box (e.g. Acacia Avenue, or Hill Road) and put date in the residence year box and hit enter.
Even trying different year ranges, though I got a variety of street names in the results, the first result each time was for the street I searched for.

The method I posted applies to Ancestry, which you said you do have access to.

Make sure you are searching 'just' the specific database by clicking on
Search
Choose card catalogue from the drop down list
Put 1939 as the search term
Choose the 1939 register from the list that appears on the right hand side
which will take you to this page:

https://www.ancestry.co.uk/search/collections/61596/

From there just enter the details in two fields I mentioned

Lived in: name of village, county, country

Keyword: (road name followed by street/road/whatever it is)

and you will get to the road in the village you specified

browse from there

I would start with your local Archives, most have an online catalogue and look at historic maps some may be available on https://maps.nls.uk/

A general google search will probably also yield all kinds of interesting information as may any local history society.

 you could also try

https://maps.nls.uk/geo/find/#zoom=12&lat=54.98124&lon=-1.62144&layers=102&b=1&z=1&point=0,0

Loads of old maps...

Good luck

Are you willing to let us know the name of your village and of your street?

City Library has old directories, maps and electoral registers. If you are a library member, it may be possible to access online resources such as Findmypast/British Newspaper Archive also.
