Does anyone have anything at all about Carr families in Newbury 1790 - 1850. My ancestor John Carr b 1798 in Great Bedwyn, Wiltshire is proving to be very elusive. He lived in Newbury 1820 - 1845 and would have married Ann? around 1831. Thanks.

You need to be clearer about what information you are looking for in Newbury 1790 - 1850 on the Carr family. If as you say John was bn Gt Bedwyn in the early 1800's why do you think the family was in Newbury prior to his birth.
His age on census varies
1841 was listed as 34 but amended to 30 (because of rounding )
1851 age 48
1861 age 62.

Daug Ann (Annie 1861 Census) is a lodger in Newbury in 1851 age 7
She is still in London in 1871 as a Servant.

Thanks Capetown. The problem I have is with Ann Carr, my 2nd great-grandmother. The Parish Register entry for Ann's baptism is 30 Jan 1844: It lists her parents as Thomas and Ann. Thomas was listed as a Papermaker. Her Birth certificate 1 week earlier gives John and Ann as her parents. Her Marriage certificate also shows John as her father (Sawyer). All the censuses give her birthplace as Newbury (Except 1861 which says Reading). I looked at the logs of Newbury Union Workhouse when I was at the Berkshire Record Office some years ago and it showed John in the workhouse after his wife Ann (Plank) had died in 1848. They had several children, most of whom died in the workhouse but Ann is not mentioned.
John was born in Great Bedwyn in Wiltshire and Thomas was born in Newbury, so that puts doubt on them being brothers. I'm still confused...

I'll have another look

assume: Ann died in childbirth??
CARR Ann, 1848 - J Quarter in Newbury, aged 36.
? As Ann died and John is lodging elsewhere
?
National Archives - Coronor's Papers - 24 June 1848
William CARR (Newbury)

? where are the children in 1851

John Carr
Baptism 29 Jul 1798
Great Bedwin, Wiltshire
Parents Richard & Martha
There was a brother Thomas but he was baptised 17 Apr 1796

All the children except Ann had died by 1851
Ann nee Plank died in childbirth as she was buried 2 days before her son William was baptised on 8 May 1848. He died on 24 Feb 1849.

I think "Amy" is another Ann. Ancestry have indexed her thus, and the image could be Ann. There's a tall h from John underneath the second n which could be read as a y to make Amy, so I can see where it comes from

Yes, I agree, it is Ann.

There is a Public Members Tree on Ancestry
Thomas CARR married Elizabeth PALMER -3 November 1834, Berkshire, England
Ann CARR's age on the 1851 census - seems to be 8.

If you use the GRO website it gives an age at death
https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/login.asp
CARR, WILLIAM age 4

There are two Anns in Newbury according to the GRO website:
CARR, ANN JONES
GRO Reference: 1842 J Quarter in NEWBURY Volume 06 Page 212
FreeBMD gives this as 6 214 so obviously a mistake.
CARR, ANN PLANK
GRO Reference: 1844 M Quarter in NEWBURY Volume 06 Page 229
So Thomas married Elizabeth Jones (not Palmer) and John married Ann Plank.
I'm getting there!

Could someone please find the baptism of Thomas Carr around 1806/7 in Newbury. I doubt if he was the brother of John as they were born in different counties according to the census returns. If they had the same father, that would clinch it. John's parents were Richard Carr and Mary nee Wilson. Many thanks.

Don't get too hung up on different counties. Newbury is only about 15 miles from Great Bedwyn, and both are on the Kennet & Avon Canal so connected by river as well as by road. (Bedwyn is just off the London to Bath road, a major route in those days.)

Just to recap on Thomas CARR and Elizabeth (tree on Ancestry gives Elizabeth's surname as PALMER)

Ancestry doesn't have Berkshire baptism, but have been looking at
Newbury St Nicolas - Tinstaafl Transcripts (as this is where Thomas CARR married 10 July 1825)
There are a number of Carr marriages including
20 July 1792 - of Thomas CARR to Elizabeth BOWLES.
? Where are this couple later on
----
The 'family' occupation appear to be Sawyer's who travel from County to County, probably using the River.....
There is also an Elizabeth CARR who married John ARPUTT - 19 July 1790.

Looking at the above website - the Grooms came from all over the places, Sydmonton, Hampshire, + Stratfield Mortimer - Wherwell, Hampshire - so a lot of river travel.

None of those places are very far from Newbury though. Wherwell is the furthest, at about 20 miles.
