Dear All ,

I have been searching for more information about my ggg grandfather Charles Clark 1805 - 1849. Charles married Isabella Machray 1802 - 1878 and they had 3 boys and 3 girls. I just can't find anything on Charles's parents. I do hope somebody can help me!

CHARLES CLERK Married    ISOBEL MACHRAY   30/05/1824   Glenmuick, Tullich and Glengair

I note the marriage above & also their children all born in Aberdeen. I’m guessing that this is Isabella below, I believe she had a brother Isaac, in 1841 he is an Innkeeper in Aberdeen and it looks like Isabella’s son Isaac age 14 is with him. I cannot find the rest of the family in 1841, were you able to?

MCCHRAY   ISABEL   PETER MCCHRAY/ISABEL MILNE   03/04/1802   Aboyne

I note the death of Charles on family search, which notes his year of birth as 1805, without other evidence it might be difficult to find his birth. Based on their children’s names the best match I can find for Charles is below.

ALEXANDER CLARK   Married    MARY ELLIS   18/03/1797   Rescobie, Angus

They had three children there (On SP mother noted as Allice/Ellis)

MARGARET 24/01/1798, JOHN 3/11/1799, CHARLES 13/08/1801

Thank you very much Colin! I don't have any census's for the family at all. I didn't know about Isaac being an innkeeper! Very difficult when you are the wrong side of the border! Are you on ancestry? Can I pm you? You are clearly the man to ask! Perhaps I could send you a link to my family tree , then you will see the only area I can't complete is my scottish ancestors! Being born in Fife I am desperate to work out my true scottish roots!

Hope to here from you soon!  :)

....
. I don't have any census's for the family at all.

This looks to be the Clark family in 1851, following Charles's death:

www.freecen.org.uk/search_records/5902681de9379091b1cfc39f/isobel-clark-1851-aberdeenshire-aberdeen-1802-?locale=en

And 1861:

www.freecen.org.uk/search_records/59026b78e9379091b1dd9c18/isabella-clark-1861-aberdeenshire-aberdeen-1802-?locale=en

Final census, for 1871, before Isobel's death:

www.freecen.org.uk/search_records/59027023e9379091b1f115f1/isabella-machray-clark-1871-aberdeenshire-old-machar-1804-?locale=en

Their entry for 1841 is still AWOL.... :-\

What occupation was given for Charles Clark?

Hi Monica ,

I am so grateful to you for all the work you have done! Charles was a horse hirer / worker at gas works / coach guard and groom all I presume in Aberdeen? If you look at my tree click on charles's page and then gallery. I found his headstone in Nellfield cemetery but can't understand it. I know of Anna Boening but middle name of Morrison suggests she married but died single at 22? Charles and Isabella are NOT her parents! Carl Boening and Helen Annand were! I understand Helen Clark who is the sister of my ggg grandfather Peter Machray Clark. I don't know who David R.L Clark is or his wife Mary Dunbar? All very confusing! If Colin and you can help me that would be wonderful  :) ps I will show my family your kind links in previous message tomorrow!  :)

Hi Matthew, I have been a member of Ancestry on and off for a few years but my membership ended in December.

Below were the only records I could find on SP for CHARLES CLARK/ISABEL MACHRAY, all born Aberdeen. There was also two in 1826, &1829, for a CHARLES CLARK/ISABEL ANN CLARK and another in 1826 for a CHARLES CLARK/ISABEL CORMACK

ALEXANDER 1825, ISAAC1826, HELEN 1829, PETER 1832, MARGARET 1834. – You noted they had 3 boys & 3 girls, one girl missing, that could be MARY 1827 but mother noted as Isabella Clark?

I also saw the 1851 census on freereg that Monica posted and it certainly looked like the Isabella birth in Aboyne I posted, as did the two eldest children listed Helen & Peter. but I could not find suitable records for the other 4 children lised.

Perhaps you might know of them?

Including the children named on the censuses and those you found Colin on SP, this would look to be the list of children for Charles and Isobel:

Alexander 1824 (from the OPRs)
Isaac 1826 (from the OPRs)
Helen 1829 (from the OPRs)...you have details on.
Peter 1832 (from the OPRs)...you have details on.
Margaret 1834 (from the OPRs). Looks to have died and name re-used.
Isabel 1836 est. (from the 1851 census)...you have details on.
John 1838 est. (from the 1851 census)
Ann 1840 est. (from the 1851 census)
Margaret 1844 est. (from the 1851 census)

Hi Monica et al ,

Well the good news is I have found Isabella Milne's parents.
Also another sister of Isabella Machray 1802 - 1878 , named Helen 1806-?
Charles Clark 1805-1849 is still a complete mystery!
So the Clark Family of Scottish origin (as far as I know) has become frustratingly mysterious!  ::)

Dear All ,

I am still trying to find out who my ggg grandfather is... My ancestry tree on my side of the family has hit a brick wall. Charles married Isabella Machray 1802-1878 they had 5 daughters & 4 sons.

They married at Glenmuick 30th May 1824. I have found Isabella's parents but not Charles's parents and so my family line ends at 1805. I have found the family headstone on findagrave which is in Nellfield Cemetary , Aberdeen.

I have looked through and tried many Charles Clark's from Glenbucket , Lonmay , Kildrummy etc. Also a tentative link to a Alexander Clark of Fettercairn born 1772. I'm not sure at all about this link?

Any help to crack the great "Clark Mystery" greatly appreciated or perhaps through lack of family information I have got as far back as possible. I have all census's for the family other than 1841 , looked everywhere...

Matthew  :)

Hi Matthew

Have you got sibling James Machray who is showing here https://ancestors.familysearch.org/en/LZLJ-PLP/isaac-machray-1800-1856

Can't see an entry in the OPRs for any of Peter and Isobel's children, except for Isaac.

Monica

ADDED: Some further details here for Isaac www.genealogy.com/forum/surnames/topics/machray/3/

One more popping up! Margaret Birss (born Machray), 1792 - 1889. See www.myheritage.com/names/margaret_birss  She is the third entry on the page.
