Hi
I am unable to find a death record for John Swadling, baptised Bucks 3/10/1824.
In 1841 Census: Great Marlow, John shown as single.
1845: John married Sophia Hester in Bucks.
1851 Census: Great Marlow, John shown as married but at different address to Sophia.
1861 Census: Great Marlow, Sophia shown as married but John not found.
1871 Census: Earley, Berks, Sophia shown as widow, John not found.
I can find no death record for him between 1852 and 1871 on FreeReg, FindMyPast, Ancestry, Family Search, MyHeritage or the Genealogist.
And I can find no record of his departure from ports at London, Portsmouth or Liverpool.
Can anyone please suggest further avenues to follow? All advice gratefully accepted.

Have you ruled out these two deaths?
JFM 1899 Wokingham - age 73
OND 1879 Reading - age 53
Sophia may only have been using the term widow for convenience, after being on her own for so long

If this is the correct John Swadling it looks like he married Mary Ann Claydon soon after the 1851 census Q2/1851 Abingdon, Berkshire, England Volume: 6 Page 32

Thanks, Colin
I’ve previously looked at John, husband of Mary Ann. But in the 1851 census his birthplace was shown as March Baldon, Oxon and he was living in the home of his Claydon father-in-law. The John I’m looking for, husband of Sophia Hester, was in Great Marlow in the 1851 census and had been born there.
I’ve still to check out the 1879 and 1899 deaths.
I take your interesting point about Sophia using the term widow for convenience – I had never thought of that.Cheer
