Hi, I'm primarily looking to find out the maiden name of my great great grandmother. I seem to hit brick wall after brick wall. I'm completely stumped.
I have the family on the 1891 census which states:
6 Wellington Street Normanby
James Flynn 28 - Head
Sarah Flynn 27 - Wife
James Flynn 9 - Son
Bridget Flynn 6 - Daughter (My Great Grandmother)
John Flynn 3 - Son
Hugh Flynn 1 - Son
Catherine Flynn 46 - Mother
John Flynn 22 - Brother
Bridget Flynn 18 - Sister
There's a few boarders too.
I cannot find a definite match for Sarah after or before this. It does say she was born in Middlesbrough, Yorkshire, whereas her husband James was born in Ireland.
If you can help me to find out Sarah's maiden name/ background, I'd be so grateful.

At the moment I can't see birth regs on the GRO Birth Index that would give a common mother's maiden name for the children
The majority of the children are living as nieces/nephews with Patrick and Kate Loughrane in 1901 - Presumabley you have had no success in tracing how they are connected?? :-\

A possible pre 1891 mention of Sarah

and a possible one for James

The 1911 has Patrick and Catherine (Kate), albeit both only aged by 3 and 5 years respectively, as married 12 years, no children. Niece, Catherine Flinn (Kate Flynn), aged by 10, still living with them. All at 37 Graham St, South Bank, Eston.

If the marriage of 12 years is correct there is this possible marriage :-\
Catherine Coyle - Patrick Loughran June Qtr 1899 Middlesbro' 9d 1147

On the assumption that they were Catholic and that the PoB of South Bank is correct, you could ask for a look-up of the records for St. Peter, South Bank held at Teesside Archives/Middlesbrough Reference Library, when they reopen:

Thank you all so much, I loved the added info about the court cases.....sounds just like my family, lol x
I came across Patrick and Kate too, but presumed Kate was a Flynn. Just to make sure, I think I will contact Teesside Archives/Middlesbrough Reference Library before I go ahead.
Many thanks, Bonnie.

The 1901 census Catherine's YoB as c1861, so I suspect that she had been married previously, possibly this one:
1888 Q1 Middlesbrough - Bernard COILE & Catherine FLYNN
