Hi All
As the board seems to have gone a bit quiet ~
I've just found this photo that was sent to me nearly 20 years ago. It's not all that clear but I don't have any other version. This is said to be 1st cousin 4x removed' s mother in law. Her husband was a blacksmith in Castle Douglas.
If you have time, I'd love some restoration and toning but no colour.
Thanks

I've just been checking and I'd say it is more likely to be Adam's sister in law as his mother in law was recorded as 50 +/- on the 1841.

Beautiful photo Gadget. I think I am losing what little skill I had, but it was fun to play with this. :)
Good entertainment for a hot afternoon.

Just to see how it looks! ;)

Thanks for posting, Gadget.
Here's my try.

I've been having trouble with my internet connection this morning.
Thank you all very much for the restores. She has come up a treat. That braiding on her dress looks like a lot of work for the dressmaker and her pocket or bag looks as if it's held quite a few things.
I've got a photo of her husband or son that I'll put up later. The men were blacksmiths and hotel owners. My relative, Adam, was a watchmaker who eventually went blind. He and Elizabeth, the blacksmith's daughter, moved to Liverpool. Their children went to Australia and New Zealand. Margaret came home and married late in life and settled in Wigtownshire.

Add- I've now investigated and iI think it's Adam's brother in law's wife, Jane.

Here is my go at your lovely photo, the braiding on the dress is something else!
