Hi there,
One of my ancestors was born in Spain in 1853 (exact date from 1939 census). His father was working out there. They were all British subjects. I have looked for a birth certificate but can't find one. Wouldn't he still have one even if he was born abroad?
Any reason he wouldn't?
Any ideas would be most welcome
Thank you
Vicky

Have you checked the British overseas registers on FindMyPast? Numerous entries for 1850s Spain. If you are happy to share the name, we can look for you.

Where do I find that?

Available on FindMyPast and elsewhere.

Ok great. Thank you. I don't have paid access to any sites, will I still be able to view them?

The indexes are usually free to search. As said, you can post the name here. Some general info at https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/help-with-your-research/research-guides/birth-marriage-death-sea-or-abroad/ .

Thank you for your help. I've had a look through Findmypast but nothing there unfortunately. I noticed his brother who was born in Italy also has no birth certificate.
Frustrating as I'd like to find his birth record.

Have you tried Familysearch.Org?
Trish :)

Yes I have. The only records that come up for him are census records and marriage records.
