Title: Female Prisoner Woking.
Post by: Sheila Whittingham on Sunday 07 February 21 13:44 GMT (UK)
Can anyone advise me as to whether I am able to find a prison photograph of my 3x Grandmother who was a prisoner in Female Prison Woking from  her trial in 1874 until her death in the prison in 1881 aged 81 of natural causes. Her name was Caroline Flower and was sentenced to 20 years for the manslaughter of her daughter in law.
I have all other information on her life plus the newspaper reports of her trial etc. but I photograph of her plus where she is buried would complete the story.
Thankyou.

Have you tried TNA, Kew or Surrey History centre, I have not looked at either to see what records they hold

As for burial - Woking crematorium which is very close opened in 1878, Brookwood cemetery is also a possibility.  If not then try the local churches either St Johns or Knaphill

https://www.prisonhistory.org/prison/woking-female-prison/

I researched a man who was in Woking Invalid Prison around the same time and travelled to Kew to try to find his prison record, they provided me with lots of information but at that time told me prison records were at the records office in Surrey, so I contacted them, they hadn't got them and told me to go to Kew. Years later I eventually found his scanned prison record along with his photo on Ancestry and they have access to them via Kew  so TNA at Kew do have them.

This might be of some use, it is a difficult website to read but does have useful info http://studymore.org.uk/4_13_TA.HTM
