I’m hoping for help in finding the wife of my 7x great grandfather William Renwick, who was born on March 4, 1719 in Temple, Midlothian, Scotland. His parents were James Renwick born in the 1690s and Agnes Scot, born on Oct 17, 1694 in Melrose, Roxburghshire. They were married in Nov 1715.
I’ve traced all my Renwick ancestors back from my grandfather, James Renwick, 1890-1976 born in Hawick along the border. My ancestors mostly lived in the border region so it’s somewhat easy to identity family members. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Did you look on https://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk for the names of his children?
If so did they name his wife?
If not do you know the names of their possible children?
Colin

Yes, I’ve used scotlandspeople many times. His one son I know of was William Renwick, born May 11, 1744 in Kirkton, Roxburgh, and his wife was Janet Glendinning.
I can’t find the wife of my 7x great grandfather or any other children. I found a possible wife but their children were a David and John which doesn’t follow the naming patterns of my family. Thank you for your help.

Jim Renwick of Hawick and Scotland (rugby) in your tree?
Hibee

No, sorry but he isn’t.

I'm not too clear on the above but is this the couple you refer to?
RENWICK MARGARET WILLIAM RENWICK/MARGARET GLENDUNNING 01/10/1749 Castleton
RENWICK CATHARINE WILLIAM RENWICK/JANET GLENDUNNING 18/10/1754 Castleton

Just to recap.
WILLIAM RENWICK JAMES RENWICK/AGNES SCOT 04/03/1719 Temple
Also James 1717 (No others)
WILLIAM RENWICK Father - WILLIAM RENWICK 11/05/1744 Kirkton
The only marriage in Scotland on SP 1735 - 1744
RENNICK WILLIAM AGNES KNOX 25/11/1737 Selkirk
This is speculation but I note the following deaths on SP. I wonder if Agnes moved back to Roxburgh after James died?
JAMES RENWICK Died 02/02/1735 Temple
AGNES RENNICK Died 12/09/1736 Wilton, Roxburgh

Your recap is accurate and sorry for the confusion. James Renwick (???) and Agnes Scot (1694) Melrose are the parents of James Renwick (1717-1717) and William (1719) Temple. William 1719 is my 7x great grandfather but I can’t find his wife and she isn’t named on his baptism registry.
William 1719 had a son William 1744 Kirkton, whose wife was Janet/Margaret Glendinning 1742 Coldstream. Well, I guess that’s the end of my search for the missing wife.
Thank you for all your help and for the possible death dates for James and Agnes.

“William 1719 had a son William 1744 Kirkton, whose wife was Janet/Margaret Glendinning 1742"
Thank you that was what I thought you meant.
However the only marriages I could find for anything like those names were the ones I posted.
RENWICK MARGARET WILLIAM RENWICK/MARGARET GLENDUNNING 01/10/1749 Castleton
RENWICK CATHARINE WILLIAM RENWICK/JANET GLENDUNNING 18/10/1754 Castleton
I found two births for the above.
RENWICK MARGARET WILLIAM RENWICK/MARGARET GLENDUNNING 1/10/1749 Castleton
RENWICK CATHARINE WILLIAM RENWICK/JANET GLENDUNNING 18/10/1754 Castleton
Obviously this cannot be your William born 1744, so did you find the marriage for him?
I guess you have ruled out the 1837 marriage for his father to Agnes Knox?

I redid the math for the marriage of William Renwick 1719 and Agnes Knox. Yes, she might be the wife, and William would have been 18 years old when they married. Their son, William, was born in 1744 making the father, William, 25 years old then. There must be other children, and thanks for mentioning Agnes Knox again. You’ve been very helpful.

Colin, Just to let you know that The FamilySearch site has Agnes Knox as the wife of William Renwick 1719 and a son, William 1744. However their marriage was on Oct 17, 1738 in Selkirk, Scotland. I couldn’t tell into which family Agnes Knox was born. Just too many listed. Again thank you.

I note the birth on SP
WILLIAM RENNICK 17/10/1738 Selkirk
WILLIAM RENNICK/AGNES KNOX
WILLIAM RENNICK married AGNES KNOX 25/11/1737 Selkirk
Colin

I’m confused a bit.....William Rennick was born 17/10/1738. Therefore he couldn’t be the William Renwick who married Agnes Knox on 25/11/1737.

Your original post stated.

Your earlier post, which I agree with stated.

You also posted
William Renwick 1719 had one son I know of was William Renwick, born May 11, 1744 in Kirkton, Roxburgh, and his wife was Janet Glendinning.
So the question is how did you conclude the 1744 William was correct and how did you know his wife was Janet Glendinning..

Good question and I’m trying to answer it. Both Ancestry and FamilySearch have William 1744 married to Janet Glendinning but I’m rechecking things. Birth of William 1744 is uploaded.

Both Ancestry and FamilySearch have William 1744 married to Janet Glendinning Birth of William 1744 is uploaded.
You could contact the Ancestry member to see if they have evidence that William 1744, is the one who had a son James in 1764.
I see the records on family search both the same as on SP, I do not see a marriage on either site?
William Renwick Christening11 May 1744
Kirkton, Roxburghshire
Father's Name: William Renwick
Name: William Renwick
Wife: Janet Glendinning
Son: James Renwick
Christening 28 Oct 1764
Castleton, Roxburghshire
There were 8 William Rennick/Renwick's born, 1700 - 1748, in Roxburghshire who would be of an age to be the father of James, however there were only 3 marriages 1718 - 1764 and only 1 more to 1778. So maybe that illustrates an issue?
Sorry I have not been able to help.

From my grandfather, James Renwick, born in Hawick in 1890 to William 1744 and Janet Glendinning and their son, James, have been easily found and documented. However, I can’t be sure of the father of William and the other ancestors so for now so I’ll delete them for now, and I’ll keep their records and your suggestions. I so appreciate your help and observations. Thank you again.

I’m back! I’ve been rechecking my ancestors, and I think there’s an error concerning the children of William Renwick 1744 and Janet Glendinning. I don’t know if you have the time though?
-
With the help of a professional genealogist, my Renwick genealogy was traced back to George Renwick 1790, Hobkirk and his wife Agnes Kenzie 1805, Bowknowe and their 6 children. On the death certificate of George, his father was James Renwick 1764 Castleton and his mother Jean Anderson 1755 Hobkirk. From here on I did my own research and made mistakes. I thought to that William Renwick 1744 Kirkton and Janet Glendinning 1742 Coldstream to be the next generation but I’m wrong. So I’m hoping for help looking for the parents of James Renwick 1764. Thank you for any suggestions.

George 1790, father James Renwick 1764 Castleton, mother Jean Anderson 1755 Hobkirk.
Children born Hobkirk, father JAMES RENWICK
WILLIAM 5/04/1789, GEORGE 19/09/1790, JANET 16/09/1792,
WILLIAM 1/06/1794, JANET 28/08/1796, BENJAMIN 26/10/1800, MARY 24/02/1828.
One burial on SP Hobkirk 1789 to 1855. - JENNET RENWICK 20/07/1821
It seems unlikely that this is the correct JEAN ANDERSON 25/05/1755 Hobkirk, father GEORGE ANDERSON, if the above family is the right one she would be 73 when Mary was born.

Even assuming Mary is not their child, which does seem unlikely, I cannot find a Marriage for James & Jean Anderson in the County?
Colin

There is no doubt that the only record on SP for a James between 1740 & 1773 in Roxburghshire is the one below, parents William Renwick & Janet Glendinning/Glendunning,
James RENWICK Baptism 28 Oct 1764 Roxburghshire, Castleton: Parish Church, Abode Mangertown
It is possible that they had a daughter earlier?
Catharine RENWICK Baptism 18 Oct 1754 Roxburghshire, Castleton : Parish Church, Abode Hardon
That does appear to be a contender; however I am a little concerned about the age difference between James & Jean, not impossible I know.
It is possible that the record for James has not survived, or was never recorded. In addition there are two parishes around Hawick where there are gaps in the records, Kirkton/Kirktown no records between 1751- 1820 – Teviothead only from 1824.
For example A William Renwick, father William was born Kirkton 1744
Sorry I could not be of more help.

I went back and reread all the info the genealogist send me 6 years ago, and I understand why I’ve been confused. A couple of things I missed are the father of George 1790 was James Renwick of Middleburn, and I agree that the dates don’t work for the Jane Anderson to be the mother. You named the correct children of James and an unknown wife, Jean Anderson.
The expert suggested that the parents of George might be might be William Renwick and Margaret Cessford, married at Hobkirk on 20 May 1733 but I haven’t looked at this yet.
Who is the Mary you mentioned? I’ve never found her.
Bev
-
The only reference I can see to a place called Middleburn is in Perth & Kinross, the nearest to that name on SP is Middlebie in Dumfriesshire.
WILLIAM RENNICK Married MARGARET CESSFOORD 20/05/1733 Hobkirk
No children on SP
There was also this marriage.
WILLIAM RENNICK Married JANNET BOYD 03/09/1732 Wilton
They had 5 children in Hawick, no James
The record for Mary was on SP births in Hobkirk, father James.

Doesn’t look good, but I’ll recheck the birth and death certificates of the 6 children: William, George, Janet, second William, second Janet and Benjamin.
