Title: Catherine O'Neill - Migration & marriage in Canada
Post by: Elwyn Soutter on Wednesday 03 February 21 23:04 GMT (UK)
Looking for assistance with a marriage in Canada and arrival information in Canada.

Catherine O’Neill born 2nd March 1891 Co Antrim, Ireland went to Canada sometime between 1908 and 1932. She married John Burnett born c 1890, Glasgow, Scotland.  I don’t have a date for their marriage but they had a son Hugh William Cameron Burnett in Montreal 27.6.1932, so the marriage was likely before that and in Canada. (There may also have been children John & James. No dates known for them). Catherine died in Montreal on 24.12.1969 and as far as I know spent most of her life in Canada there.

Can anyone find Catherine’s arrival in Canada on passenger lists, and also her marriage in Canada (presumably in or near Montreal)?

John Burnett & wife Catherine returning to Montreal (arrived 13 May 1920 from Glasgow on ‘Sicilian’) with infant daughter Catherine aged 7 months. He previously in Canada 1912-1915. Have you checked for marriage in Scotland or Ireland?
They should appear in 1921 Canadian census.

Added- daughter Catherine born Glasgow (her birth should list date & place of parents' marriage).
More- Arrival form gives Catherine's brother as Wm. John Howie, 138 St. James Road, Glasgow.

Wondering if I've found correct family.

Very grateful for your help. Very helpful.

Yes I had searched for a marriage in both Ireland and Scotland.  Suspect they married in Canada but could be wrong. My Ancestry sub doesn’t cover migration or Canadian census records, so haven’t been able to search those.

I have found a fairly sparse tree on Ancestry with the couple on it and may get more information that way.

I’ll go down the Scottish birth cert route. Catherine's parents details should clarify whether it's the right family.

Catherine Burnett & daughter Catherine V. made a trip to Scotland in 1928 and contact is (mother) Mrs. Alexaner Howie.

Wonder if your Catherine could be a second wife?

That couple were John Burnett married to Catherine Howie (m 1918 Glasgow), with daughter Catherine Victoria Howie Burnett, so I think it’s not the Catherine & John I am looking for, unless he later married Catherine O’Neill post 1920, which is possible.

Elwyn, re above noted reply for Catherine's sailing in 1911. She was on the 'Lake Manitoba' which sailed from Belfast on 29th October 1911. Destination was Quebec and Montreal. The 'Master's name' was G C Evans. 'Kate' (identified thus) was listed age 20 and her occupation noted as 'Domestic'.

1901 census for 138 St James Road, Glasgow has a family group consisting of:

Alexander Howie born Scotland
wife Joan Howie born England
daughters Mary, Janet, Catherine and Alison all born Glasgow
son John W born Glasgow

so this fits with the family of the Catherine Howie/John Burnett marriage and names/address  mentioned in travel records.

How certain are you that the 24/12/1869 death of a Catherine Burnett in Montreal, is the Catherine O'Neill of the 1891 Antrim birth?

Did you note that by coincidence or otherwise, in the same cemetery is a Catherine Victoria Burnett died 1987 - the same names as the child born to Catherine Howie/John Burnett, possibly also Catherine Howie's full name, so depending on age, perhaps the latter?

Quebec, Canada, Vital and Church Records (Drouin Collection) 1621 - 1968.
Anglican St. George 1921.

Marriage, all is hand written on each page of 'register'.
Column:
Burnett and O'Neill Marr.
Very faint date is 'Dec 7th'. (Date & December confirmed below. NO punctuation!)

John Burnett bachelor of Montreal son of George Burnett of Montreal and of Janet Reston
his wife and Katharine (note 'ar') O'Neill spinster of Montreal daughter of William John O'Neill of Randalstown Ireland and of Jane Cameron his wife were married after due publication of Banns on the Seventh day of December in the year of our Lord Nineteen Hundred and Twenty One
This marriage was duly solemnized between us
Signed (all below each other):
John Burnett
Katherine O'Neill (Capital 'K' ... note 'er')
In the presence of
William John ?Mathe?
Ciara E Innes
Another signature ('Signed' by name below) and title to the right at 45 degrees is faint and illegible. Surely the person conducting the Service.

In the search for this marriage O'Neill was interpreted and written as Oweel. This 'caught my eye'!

There is NO sign of birth for Hugh in 1932.

That's it! I hope the above is helpful.

Thanks very much for all the extensive help here. It’s all come in so fast I haven’t been able to keep up! Yes I have got 2 couples mixed up. The couple who married in Glasgow in 1918 are the wrong couple. The one I am after is the one Christine53 has found, who married in Montreal. So there’s lots of useful references to them. Thank you. I’ll have to go through this and assimilate it all.

Sandra,

I think I am probably complete now. You – with others help - have identified the right family. I am helping someone in BC who is looking to locate living relatives in or around Montreal. Obviously we don't do that directly on RC but you have provided enough information for them to trace a couple of likely candidates on social media sites, plus the Ancestry tree belonging to one descendant is another avenue.

So I am very happy.

That's brilliant.  Just ask if you need something else.  Message me if its living people. Can't guarantee but always willing to have a go.

Regards
Sandra
