can any one tell me if there is a index for police officers in Middlesex in the mid 1800's. I am looking for William Borley born app 1822 Long Melford.

Hi Sabrina
It might be worth contacting the Metropolitan Police archives.

Thank you for the sites Some interesting things happened to some of the police officers over the years. I don't think they have what I wanted.

Hi Sabrina,
You can also try www.externalserver.me.uk:8085/
That is the police oreders site.
They have a data base you can search and find when your man joined, retired, etc.

p.s. did a quick search and found only Frederick Borley circa 1946

There is quite a bit of stuff about the Metropolitan Police at Kew (The National Archives). Also have you looked on 'Cyndi's List' for sites about Police?

Another site I have found is www.policeorders.co.uk

I agree about going to the National Archives at Kew. I had a relation that was a Met Police Inspector. Thanks to the staff there I was able to locate his joining dates and who was a reference, Police orders with his various promotions and also a description about when he retired and the pension he retired on. There was also info about what he looked like, ie. height, colour of hair and eyes etc. If you have the time it is certainly worth a visit.
Kind regards

we have a George Sladen born Nottingham born1863.
He was a police constable with the metro police which i am assuming has to be the metropolitan police.
on the 1891 census he was 28 years old living in old st pancras.
on the 1901 census he was married with a family and still a police constable living in enfeild middlesex.
I have looked on the police sites suggested but cant find anything.
very interesting though as there must be records somewhere...the search continues !
