Title: Evan Morris: 21/09/1860 - 23/01/1940 GWR employment records
Post by: StDavids on Monday 25 January 21 16:59 GMT (UK)
All 4 of my great grandfathers were employed by the Great Western Railway.  I have easily found the GWR employment details of 3 of them , but can't find details of the 4th.  He lived in the Goytre area and was some sort of "platelayer" for the railway for very many years.  He described himself in 1886 as a "Packer on the line".  In the 1911 census he described himself as a "Railway Platelayer Ganger".
The GWR records I have seen on Ancestry seem mainly for operating staff or engineering staff , rather than "Track maintenance staff".  Any help with where I might source  details of his railway employment would be appreciated.

Do not know if you know what a platelayer is, but they are a gang of men who lay the railway line or tracks.
