Ive tried all the suggestions on the web about how to remove these, but nothing works.
Mostly because the " hamburger " presume is the three line menu thing isn't there, also tapping the satellite view doesn't do anything either.,
Any ideas. Using Android Samsung tablet
-
I don't use tablets at all ;D
But this is how it works on my PC.
Where you type in the name of the location you are searching for, the "hamburger" is to the left of the location name.
-
Preferably I use my tablet rather than desktop. There is absolutely no menu, settling I can see either on the app or internet page. It's so annoying, practically every shop or restaurant is labelled.
I want to send a link so someone can see where their ancestors lived but it's ruined by all the junk on the page.

Wilcoxon, I have a Samsung tablet and have just had a look to see if I could find an answer to your question, this is what I've found:
In the search bar at the top of Maps there's an orange circle next to the microphone symbol on the right, on mine that circle contains my initial Click on that and it gives you a list of options, second from the bottom is Settings. Click on that, it gives another long list. Fifth from the bottom is Manage your Preferences. Click on that, then on Learn more (in blue type). There's loads of stuff there, I haven't read through it all, just wanted to help you get started, but it looks like it'll be what you need. I'll check back later and see if it's what you were looking for. Good luck :)
-
I dont have anything.
-
At which point? Do you mean there's no orange circle?
-
This is what mine looks like when I open the app. (It should automatically open up the map of the area where you're situated. This isn't my area, I tailored it specially for you. ;) )
Look to the extreme right of the bar where it says Search here. There's an orange dot with an R in it. Yours should have your own initial in it, that's where you need to click.
-
Just to add that, although I don't have a Samsung tablet, I have a Samsung phone. The only difference I found from Roobarb's instructions is that I have a blue circle with my initial on it and not an orange one. Also, it comes up as greyed out for a few seconds.
-
Mine is bluish. But when I click it takes me to my Google acount.
-
You then have to follow the rest of the instructions:

It's difficult to advise you without more information as to what you have on the screen. However, if you can find Timeline in the Settings and turn off all timeline settings it works - none of the restaurants, takeaways etc appear, just things like museums. I've just done it on my tablet. :)
-
As far as I can see that only removes places Ive been and there are none there because I turned off location.I don't want people to know where I am.
What I want to do is view Google maps without all the labels and icons. Ive not tagged them as I haven't been to them.
To be honest I don't know if that's possible.

The location I put in before doing this was Grays Inn Road, London (the area where Barry Sheene was born!), I've never been there, it removed all of the restaurants, takeaways etc. Try it, turn off Timeline settings, believe me it does work!
-
Well, I went into Google settings and as far as I know deleted timelines. I cant see where to turn it off.
It's made no difference at all. I also tried on my desktop and still the same .

Hello wilcoxon
Been informed today that Barry Sheene's 680 cc four cylinder water cooled two stroke motorcycle is up for auction.
Claimed to be the Works machine used by Barry Sheene to win the 1978 MCN Superbike Championship

They were a beast to ride, but one that I will have to pass on with that Estimate price

One of my wishes is to take another ride on a private circuit!
My Honda VT 250 V Twin Water Cooled Super Sports, on a jolly to Hampshire mid 1990s.

It's easy to turn all that stuff on or off in Google Earth. Here's a sample with everything turned off except my own pinned locations. I could turn on street names, political boundaries, etc., as needed. All of this is done in the Layers menu on the left side of the Google Earth screen. The most offensive junk [Oasis Bar and Grill, McDaniels Auto Repair, etc.] is removed by turning off the 'Places' option. It's also easy to zoom in or out and to rotate the map to show the place from a different angle.
-
Alternatively you could just use OpenStreetMap (https://www.openstreetmap.org) and not have to switch off anything.

This thread is five years old! Perhaps Wilcoxon has found their way around it in the intervening time. :D

I haven't, and more places are showing up all the time, businesses I have never heard of.
I just can't find out how to get rid. I see settings etc but have no idea what to do with them. It's easier to find John Jones in Dolgellau 😄

Hi Roobarb and Wilcoxon
I only tagged the bit about the bike coming up for sale on this thread, because I found your reference to Sheene.
There were three of those Works Machines built and I believe Pat Hennen had the other and the third Works Machine was a spare.
Hennen caught a kerb on the Isle of Man and crashed out around 1978.
I miss all that adrenalin rush of youth!
But I think I've had most of my nine lives ::) so perhaps a good thing I had to calm down.
I remember going into the Motorbike Shop in Ramsey, Isle of Man wanting to hire a road Legal Honda 400/4 for hire in their window, got my paperwork out and he said you're joking.
I'm not hiring you the 400/4 and I asked why and he replied, because you'll bring it back with slicks on [bald tyres] ;D
Take care all, Mark
