Title: Rushtons Place, St Marys, Nottingham.
Post by: Dougalmac2 on Sunday 24 January 21 17:25 GMT (UK)
I am researching Alfred Cope supposedly born C1834 in London who, in 1861, lived at Rushtons Place, St Marys, Nottingham. Presumably this is in The Lace Market (Alfred is a Lace Maker) so Is anyone please able to tell me where this would have been as it doesn't appear to exist now?
Confusingly before and after the census  childrens births and deathes were registered at Radford, mostly.

As you have him in the 1861 census have you tried looking at the enumerators walking route or the streets either side of his entry.

Thanks for replying Rosie99 but I found it on Family Search and don't think I can do that on that site, used to be able when they only had 1881.

Rushton's Place was along Barker Gate.

By the way, I read the surname in the census as Coope.

Sorry, I take that back.  I think it's Cope.  The "C" has a loop at the bottom.

There is an Alfred Cope and wife Elizabeth/Jane Elizabeth baptising children in Lenton. Their abode is Kirk Sq and Alfred is a Twist Hand or a lace maker.
Marriage Nottingham, St Paul 5 Oct 1857 Alfred Cope and Elizabeth Jane Lawson

Thanks a lot for those replies.

Watson - I'm familiar with Barker Gate, presumably Rushtons Place was a residential part. and it's been rebuilt.

Larkspur - I'm assuming your info is from PRs. I haven't been able to find any of them 0on the web as and I said before I'm working from Family Search and they're not strong on giving exact locations for census listings. I do know that in 1881 & 1891 they lived on Harley St, Lenton.

Thanks again to you both

All I know is what I found on page 14 of Wright's Directory of Nottingham 1891, under the heading of "Bellar Gate, Barker Gate" in the street directory.  Ruston's [sic] Place is noted as being between 3 and 13 Bellar Gate.  No businesses or residents seem to be listed as being in Ruston's Place.

I have assumed that Ruston's is a misprint in the directory, and should be Rushton's.

Watson -
Thanks for the follow up. That gives me a good idea of where they were. When the libraries open up again I'll have a couple of hours in Central Library and see what I can find.

Larkspur -
Thanks for that additional info, so far I have nine children for Alfred Cope and Elizabeth / Jane / Elizabeth Jane /Jane Elizabeth from census and BMDs.

Andrew is a new one, not having appeared on any census but an Andrews death recorded Nottingham 1865

Walter appears to have been born Q2 1876 so must have been a late baptism. Walter baptised 1863 appears to have been born Q4 1859  and to have died Q3 1864.
