Title: Captain John Johnson
Post by: Tavy on Sunday 24 January 21 06:41 GMT (UK)
I have come to find several John Johnson's having been admitted to the Dreadnoughts Seamen's Hospital and in the details one column is "Quality". Most men have AB in this column which I take is able body but one John Johnson had "carp". I was hoping it meant Captain which would have helped my search as my ancestor was supposedly a Sea Captain (born about 1790) and possibly Norwegian. But carp could have also meant the ships carpenter!
Can you advise me as to CARP.

yes, that is what I suspected, so wish it was Captain as this man is difficult to find.
incase you can help further:
John Johnson
dates +/- 5 1790 to 1840
possibly born Norwary
possibly lived near wharfs/Thames if mariner
possibly had son Henry Charles and daughter Sarah Isobella
wife Mary unknown

thanks Tavy

What do I definitely know about John Johnson. That is hard to say BUT I have found his son's baptism record naming John Johnson, mariner, Tower Hamlets, as father. I have this son's indenture papers with John Johnson's name. and I have from the 41 Census that John Johnson was living with his daughter in Tower hamlets, and finally I have entries in the dreadnaughts seamans hosp BUT I am not sure which is our man.
Thanks
