This is a photo of my mum Dorothy, she was adopted as a new born and died last March, and she never knew her mum. Dorothy was born in Edinburgh on 09/12/1936 to G***** S***** F****** her mother, around 18 years of age.
G***** worked as a domestic servant at 13 Chamberlain road Edinburgh.
My mum wanted to marry in 1955 and as her adoption certificate was not correct G***** had to be contacted. A lawyer found her mother in the Dumfries area but as she was settled, married and had 2 more children she did not want to meet my mum.
Since then my mother felt she was not wanted so never tried again and refused to let me search. I know my Granny will be dead now but I would love to make contact with anyone who knew G****. I only wish a photo or some information on her life and her health. I hope someone recognises the name and perhaps a likeness in the photos. I have tried searching on sites but no luck so far. I would appreciate any suggestions. Thanks

Hi , welcome to RC :)
As it could be a sensitive subject I've edited your post.
From what you have Scotlandspeople have a 2006 death in Annan Dumfries that might match.
If you reply to this thread it will give you access to the Personal Message(PM) system -

Hello
Looking for G***** S***** F****** born around 1919 had a baby in 1936 called Dorothy.
-
Where is the reference to Dumfries, Carrbridge? See Dorothy's birth in 1936 was in Edinburgh?
Monica
-
Someone looking for the same person.
Threads merged.
-
Suggest we leave any responses for the other thread as it has more details on it? The possible death that Ev mentions is the only one I could see too. No births that I could see in Scotland for mother with those names though.
Monica
Added: I couldn't see a possible marriage in Scotland with the second surname given on the death index entry from 2006 on SP.
-
Please don't remove the post about G**** S***** F******. It's my granny and she will be deceased now. My mother, her daughter has also died. So I am looking for some information on G***** if possible. The reason it was in Dumfries's area is because that was where she lived for a short time.
-
F****** would have been her maiden name. There is a possibility that she married after 1936
and had two more children.
-
I was advised to try this site but I don't see the point if names are deleted. These people are deceased now so no harm would be done.
-
Any names on this site are viewable on the whole net.
Any other children may still be alive.
From the information provided I don't think most people would have a problem working out the names(Monica ?).
If anyone has further information they can send you a PM.
Have you looked at a possible marriage on SP in 1938 Midlothian ?
ev
-
Hello yes I saw that marriage but the middle name was Watson not Storey. The marriage was in Edinburgh to a Norman vinton
-
It is very likely that the family of Dorothy's mum have no idea she had a child that she gave up for adoption. It would be hard for anyone to hear the news online this way which is why RC asks everyone to tread carefully.
Hopefully you will find that people will send you personal messages which are off the main board and you can discuss details more freely :)
I am guessing the full name you have is what she gave for the birth registration of Dorothy? The middle name is certainly a surname. Likely a family name on either of her parents' side.
We have fingers crossed for you but a lot relies on someone perhaps identifying some details. This period is recent and very little if anything online. Be hopeful though :)

I think the possible death in Annan is not correct. The maiden name looks not to be correct for that lady. Always a problem with the index that you cannot tell which way round the names go. This lady also had a sister who died in Annan a few years earlier with the same details for mother's maiden name and the other surname (not the one you need).
Also, I was following up on another possibility from a death in 1987 also in Dumfrieshire which looked promising. However, her marriage shows in England in 1934, so...not her either.

There's a marriage of a James Little F****** to a G***** D C M******* in Castleton in 1943, which suggests that the Annan death is the wrong person altogether.
-
"... her adoption certificate was not correct"
Do you have the adoption document?. What was not correct about it?
-
A lawyer found her mother and dealt with the legal things in 1955. I don't know what was wrong with the certificate, I was never told. I was born in 1957.
-
I don't have the adoption certificate. My mother would have needed to request to see it. As she is deceased I am not sure if I will be allowed to view it.
-
Thank you Monica for trying to find some information, it is much appreciated. I realise that my mothers siblings may still be alive but if I want information I cannot wait too long. I would like a photo and perhaps some health information for myself and my own family.
-
Do you have the 1936 birth certificate?.
When and where was baby born?
When and where was birth registered?.
Who was the informant?
Who were the adopting parents?
-
Yes I have the 1936 certificate from George Square Edinburgh. 09/12/1936. Dorothy Forster
Informant? Mr and mrs Thomas Boyd.
-
Mother. G***** S***** F******
-
Birth registered. 29/12/1936
-
Your mother was not named Dorothy at birth?...this name given to her when adopted by......who?.
And the adopted parents would have the adoption documents?. And Dorothy would not need to apply for them?
When did the adopted parents die?. Did you know them?
-
The hospital was the royal maternity Edinburgh. The informant was her mum signed G***** F******
I knew her adoptive parents. My granny and grandad and they lived in Manuel terrace Whitecross

I remind you that you have been informed not to mention names in this thread and to be using the PM system to communicate.
Your mother was not named D... at birth?...this name given to her when adopted by......who?

Mr Thomas Y Boyd died 11/09/1994 aged 83. Adopted father
Adopted mother died in 1947. Not sure of details. My grandad re married when Dorothy was around 7 years old. I knew her as granny.

As the daughter of your deceased mother, you will have rights to your mothers' adoption papers as a 'Prescribed Relationship' which came into effect in 2005.
Here are a list of places you can contact as I'm unsure of the correct procedure but any of them will be able to guide you in the right direction...

The adoptive mother died in child birth having my mums sister Jean who was brought up by an aunt and uncle and now lives near me and I see her regularly. Complicated I know. Jean is married to my dad's younger brother.

I do wonder why we are finding nothing in Scotland ???
There is a tree on Ancestry with a GSF, (born on May 2 1911, in Seaham, Easington, Durham, England) , possible marriage(age 39) Sunderland 1951(from FreeBMD) , and a death in Lancashire England(added - April 11 2002, at age 90 in Burnley and Bundle, Lancashire, England).
Might be worth a look as we don't seem to be finding anything in Scotland :-\

If she was married by 1955 , I wonder how the lawyer managed to track her to Dumfries(or a misheard Durham) ?
Perhaps there was something in the adoption papers or those involved were still in contact ?
-
Many thanks ev. I shall have a look at this. My mother was told of this at 19 years of age so perhaps made a mistake of the town. She was never given her adoption papers or birth certificate and when her father died they were not in the house. We acquired a copy of her birth certificate from Edinburgh. Thanks your help is much appreciated.
-
If you follow Annie's advice(see reply #26) and obtain the adoption papers that might give you further information.
I checked the 2002 death but there doesn't seem to be a Will.

I wasn't aware of this, Annie.
Drumbowie, certainly looks promising for you to follow up further :)

Can you confirm please.....during her lifetime your mother knew, and told you / her family, the name of her birth mother?

PM sent to Drumbowie , possible children.
Thank you LL.

wivenhoe, events are too recent to publish people's names online. Whilst the birth mother may be deceased, her children will likely not be given possible birth years for them. This is why Ev has edited the post from the beginning of the thread :) For sure Drumbowie can provide more details via PMs.

My question relates to the time when information was acquired / passed on.
I am not using, or asking for, any names.
My question only requires a yes/no answer....not names

Yes
