Hi I am trying to find out which vessels my grandfather Captained during the second world war. I believe one of the ships was torpedoed by a German submarine . My grand father was badly wounded and I believe was hospitalised in New Zealand for many months
Any advice on how to find out this information would be much appreciated.
Thanks

Welcome to Rootschat Ohri :D
Could you tell us a little more about Edward? When and where was he born? The surname sounds Scottish.
Was he in the Navy as you mention vessels?

Hi,
Could this be him?
https://www.tracesofwar.com/persons/43304/McCreadie-Edward.htm
but it says he was in hospital in Newfoundland not New Zealand.

Welcome to rootschat,
It's important that you provide the information regarding his date and place of birth.
That said, I have a sneaking suspicion that the person referred to by Daisypetal is the person you seek. Assuming this is correct there are several leads for you to follow.
First off I would try and obtain his Form CRS 10 from the British National Archive. If it has survived it should be in this piece
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C10989298
These records are stored alphabetically in blocks of 60 names. If his form CRS 10 has survived it will tell you all the vessel's he served on from early 1941. together with dates and places of engagement and discharge.
You would be advised to visit TNA Kew yourself to investigate. It would also give you the opportunity to examine other records such as Survivors Reports, Logbooks and Crew Agreements etc but more of that later.
I would also contact London Metropolitan Archives who are the custodians of Lloyd's Captains Register. This should give you details of all the ships he served on after his certification as Mate.
They have an excellent research service, although not cheap.

Back to TNA Kew.
The last Logbook and Crew Agreement of EMPIRE CELT official number 164851, which will not only give an account of her loss but some personal details of her Master, including her Masters Certificate number.
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C11053542
The official survivors report of EMPIRE CELT is in the piece ADM 199/2139, page 290.
I assume TNA is still closed due to the lockdown. You would have to enquire.
You can download for free the WW2 Movement Card of EMPIRE CELT

Hi and welcome,
Edward McCreadie was born in Ardrossan, Ayrshire on 27.7.1893. He first went to sea as an apprentice in about 1911 and he has a BoT Certificate of Competency 0010241 for Master, Mate and 2nd Mate [Ancestry hold up until 1927]. He served throughout WW1 and he has 4 cards held in the Fourth Registry of Seamen one of which is a CR10 with his photo from about 1919. Files are also on pay site FindMyPast
Good advice from seaweed re his CRS 10 – just to add he has also a Combined Office Merchant Navy Operations [COMNO] pouch held at Kew in piece BT 391/70/139 - http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C9050986 This file takes to do with service at Normandy and beyond.
I can also tell you that he was serving as Mate in a voyage in 1943 aboard EMPIRE DICKENS, Mate in 1944 on a voyage aboard IMPERIAL TRANSPORT but you should obtain his CRS 10 for his records beginning Jan, 1941.
Two brothers Peter and James were killed at sea during WW2.
Regards
Hugh
