Hi
Wondered if there existed for Canadian births, marriages and deaths a centralised online resource in the same way as England has FreeBMD, GRO Index, Scotland has Scotlands People, etc. Ancestry seems to have access to records for Provinces such as Ontario where I'm looking but these only appear to go up to a certain point (births 1914, marriages 1938, deaths 1948). Apologies if this has been asked before but any help would be most welcome.

Sadly, Canada does not have a BMD Index as does the UK. What is available does vary province to province. Sometimes with the help of newspapers, marriage announcements, death announcements etc we can pick families up and make progress that way.

Vital registrations are a provincial responsibility in Canada, unlike in Britain and Scotland, where they are centralized, so each province has different rules and different guidelines as to what is available. The rules for release of these in Ontario are births up to 1917; marriages to 1938; and deaths to 1947, with a new year becoming available on microfilm each year. Ancestry's collection tends to lag by a couple of years.
