I am trying to find information on my Great Aunt, Betsey Ballard, born 1902 in Ulverston, Lancashire. She died, I think, of drowning near Grange Over Sands in 1905. I thought someone had told me about a newspaper article dealing with her death, but I couldn't find any more information on that. Any ideas where I can find newspaper archives for Lancashire?

There is a Betsy Ballard's death registered in Ulverston in the September quarter of 1905. The child's age is given as 3, so this fits in with what you know. Deaths in July, August and September are referred to as to being in the September quarter, so you need newspapers for these months in 1905.
Local archives are closed because of the current situation. There is a British Newspaper Archives webite, which allows you three free searches before it demands that you pay for a subscription. You can limit your search to certain newspapers or newspapers with a certain county or within a particular date range.

If you want the information on the death certificate, you can get this as a PDF file, sent direct to your email address from the GRO for £7, rather than paying for the formal full certificate which is about £11 from memory.

Hi
Welcome to Rootschat, good advice above , there are a couple of reports about the inquest in Soulby's Ulverston and General Intelligencer and a smaller piece in the Bolton Evening News both dated 27th July 1905.
Good luck
Cathy

Thanks for the information. I do have Betsey's death certificate, but wanted to see if I could find out a bit more of the background. The sources you provided are a good starting point.

Lancashire records office
Inquests
DDHD/CR/10/26

inquest file 3
1 file

you could possibly order this from the archives quoting the reference above,
within the same files is Nora Ballard who died from burns aged 8 in 1914 and Robert Ballard aged 18 who drowned due to suicide in 1906
