Title: Occupation of John Smith?
Post by: YorkshireBorn on Saturday 16 January 21 19:32 GMT (UK)
This is taken from the parish registers of Doncaster St George. Can anyone make out the words following "Smith" please? I believe the first letter is a "C" (see the "c" in Wheatley common on the bottom entry)

Yes, Coverlet weaver.

Other things to note about the style of writing include:

'e' looking like a backwards modern 'e', or a modern 'o'
'er' - see other examples on page
'w' is typical of the style (see 'wheatley')
'v' - often this is indistinguishable from 'u' (see 'labourer' at the end); sometimes 'n' is similar too, but the writer here has helpfully joined the top of that ('gardiner', 'Common') so you can tell the difference.
