I'm at a standstill with this person. William John McKay born abt.1861. I have no experience with Northern Ireland records and would appreciate some tips on where to go next.
I have a William John Mckay that was married in Hampshire in 1890 (to Lucy Lydia Heath). The marriage certificate shows his father's name is also William John McKay (a Farmer). And that he (the groom) was born abt.1861
The 1911 Census and his military records show him as being born in Glenarm Antrim. 1901 census says born Ireland.
His military records show next of kin as his cousin, a Miss Sarah Kelly. Residence place Baron Mill Carrickfergus Antrim. He signed up aged 19, in 1879. Military record shows he was in the "Indies" at the time of the 1881 census and was in England by 1890.
So I'm at a dead end now, unable to find his birth or his father. Any help/advice much appreciated.

Civil registration of births started in 1864 so there won't be a birth certificate. Do you know what religion he would have been? If Catholic then lots of R.C. Parish Registers are online (free) with others possibly available from pay sites. If Glenarm then these are online registers- gap in 1860s but worth checking. https://registers.nli.ie/parishes/0414
Will have a look a bit more for parents, etc., but civil registration of Catholic marriages also started in 1864 (non-Catholic marriages & Registry Office ones started in 1845)-

Thank you for your reply. I should of said, so sorry, but his millitary papers said CofE. So not Catholic.

Consider the possibility of Barn Mills, Carrickfergus https://carrickfergushistory.co.uk/barn-mills-barn-cottage/
-
Always satisfy yourself of the accuracy or otherwise of details on Ancestry, but have you seen:
. Born in Glenarm, Antrim, Northern Ireland on 09/06/1860 to William McKay and Jane Boyd. William John McKay married Lucy Lydia Heath

Ah yes I had seen this on ancestry tree. But there are no documents to back it up. I got the marriage certificate after seeing this.

Confused. Have been trying to find the 1879 military record you mentioned. Has taken a while, as it seems to be under a John McKay (no other forename or initial), of Glenarm rather than a William John McKay, with NoK his cousin, Sarah Kelly.. Do you believe John is same person as William John McKay?
*Added, I see that the 1911 census does have a John McKay, Glenarm with a wife Lucy, so is this your chap and why you believe William John and John are one and the same? Is he also the 1947 death in Gosport, Hampshire under John W McKay?

I know William John and John, are the same person because it is his granddaughter who I'm looking this information up for. She knew the names. She knew the town brought up/born in and also that he settled in Hampshire after coming out of the army and also his wife's name/surname. All confirmed by ordering the marriage certificate. Plus then the census returns for the couple also confirm that he was born NI. William John is indeed going by his middle name in later life/census returns.
One of the later army records, after he left original duties/sign up, and went back for territorial duties, it then says his next of kin is Lucy his wife in Hampshire, it is attached to orginal militiary record from 1879. He is also back on duty durying WWI for home duties. It all ties in. I'm 100% certain it is same person. Same man now living with a wife in Hampshire.
-
I too at first only found his original military papers, but later found him going back for territorial duties, then WWI, and it is the same person. They are attached. If you find it on ancestry and click on to what looks like a differnet person, few pages on, it is the same person but returned later in life for duties. If that makes sense. I stumbled across the later papers quite by accident.

So, the full info on your chap that is now available (but wasn't mentioned in your first post), to assist those trying to help you is (based on the swapping around and/or adding of names):
John McKay and no initials or other name on all military records
William John McKay on marriage record
John McKay and no initials or other name on Census
John McKay and middle initial W at death ?
Did he keep to a consistent version on the various birth records of his children?

Apologies for not mentioning it in first post. To be honest it just didn't register me with to say because I've become so use to family members (in my own tree) using middle names in census returns etc and just in my head it was one and the same. He is indeed John W McKay on death index. (1947). I presume, I don't know, but presume like many that had same name as a parent they would be called by middle name often.
Once again sorry for any confusion.

The Griffiths Valuation, which would be around time of the believed Glenarm birth and could potentially include the father, as named in the 1890 marriage, William John McKay.
Unfortunately, it has no William McKay entries in either Glenarm Upper or Glenarm Lower, although as a possibility there is a William McCay recorded in Doonan townland, Glenarm Lower.
There was a Stewart McKay, son of an Alexander McKay, who was married and fathering children at Doonan in the 1860s (see http://freepages.rootsweb.com/~fremac/genealogy/ireland/pafg12.htm ).

I still haven't found any firm evidence of the father William McKay (with or without a possible wife Jane Boyd as per online family tree) but this might be worth making a note of in case it's the same family.

I did find an extract in newspaper for a Jane McKay of Glenarm who died in 1929. GRONI's index gives her age as 90.

Note that she was Non-subscribing Presbyterian then Unitarian and that the Earls were Methodists.

One thing that bothers me is why William/John McKay gave his cousin Miss Sarah Kelly as next of kin in military records. I wonder if it was because he was staying with her or that his parents were deceased.
In any case, here's a William McKay, farmer, Glenarm, who died 1880- daughter Jane (is she the Miss Jane McKay in previous post?)-
Letters of Administration of the personal estate of William M'Kay late of Glenarm County Antrim Farmer deceased who died 19 July 1880 at same place were granted at Belfast to Jane M'Kay of Glenarm Spinster a Child of said deceased. Effects under £200. (note: unadministered means he left no Will)
Death shows he was age 68 (so born c1812) and a widower so the informant, Jane McKay, is likely the daughter mentioned in Will extract.

Ahhh you have both been very busy. Just got the PC started up and looking through it all now. This is all looking VERY promising. I can't thank you enough for the help Scotmum and Aghadowey.
Fantastic new avenue of reseach with Mary McKay's marriage and William Mckay's death.
Just looking at your comment about the different religions. I had to go look that up. I had never heard of Non-subscribing Presbyterians before today. Unfortunately the three links (the ones for Jane McKay 1901 1911 and Huge 1911) wont work for me and I get an error page. The religions are interesting indeed.
Did he keep to a consistent version on the various birth records of his children?
This I don't know. I have no baptism records for the one son I know of. No birth certificate either.
I talked to the lady in question this morning after reading the posts here. She said it was always known her granddad was William John and not just John even though he had dropped the William part on some documents. I mentioned the Jane Boyd from ancestry tree and get this, his son's FULL name was James Henry Boyd McKay b.1915. There's that Boyd turning up that you mentioned earlier. ;D
Ok still reading back and forth trying to make sense of all your finds. Thank you once again and sorry if I missed out anything in reply.

Still working at this and I may have found William/John's father William, his father and other relatives in records but will take be a while to check and double check everything.

Try the census links again- hopefully they will work now :)

Potential red herring, but posting because of surnames/location/timescale, in case they fit in somewhere down the line:
Marriage
29 Oct 1854
Glenarm
Patrick McKay son of a Daniel
to
Mary Boyd daughter of an Abraham

Still haven't been able to prove parentage of William/John McKay (other than marriage gives father's name) but have constucted a lovely tree for a McKay family which hopefully will be of use.

Well you know the old saying. If at first you don't succeed try putting your tree up on ancestry and just make up the missing parts... hehe.
But serious you have done so much. I am really very chuffed to have all the bits and bobs you have found. I mean I know it not proved YET. But his name on wedding cert, plus son born Glenarm and he's a farmer. I think that's him. I will prove it eventually. Especially now I have so much more info to work with. Something always turns up, even if it's years later. Plus all the other McKays you have found. Lots to work with there :)
The map is interesting, and the other links. It's all VERY helpful. Thanks again aghadowey. I hope I haven't taken up too much of your time. I suspect I have. You're a star! :)
