Post by: bigjon on Wednesday 06 January 21 20:24 GMT (UK)
hi
cant seem to find any records ( birth, marriage or death ) for Fishguard family in UK. I know they exist and i dont want to publish any names at this stage.

They all lived in Pembrokeshire!
Are the transcribers confused with the town of Fishguard?
The transcribers may not work in the UK and have local geographical knowledge.

The Oxford Dictionary of Family Names in Britain and Ireland doesn't have an entry for Fishguard?
Britishsurnames.co.uk also draws a blank?
SurnameDB also draws a blank.

Surnames based on Welsh place names are very rare. There's Cardiff, but I struggle to think of another. Names like Anglesea, Montgomery, Flint, Denby have other origins, and people called Knighton, Newport, Buckley etc are named for places of that name in England. (In fact Buckley was named after someone of that surname!)
