Title: Cambridge Grounds, Sheffield
Post by: gaz2195 on Tuesday 05 January 21 11:14 GMT (UK)
Does anyone have any information about which families frequented the Cambridge Grounds in Sheffield.

I've seen from other sources that there was a large travellers site in the Owlerton area of Sheffield called Cambridge Grounds (named as such because it was behind the Cambridge Hotel). There were even aerial pictures of Hillsbrough Barracks that showed part of the travellers site in one corner.

What I'm struggling to find is any info about the families that lived there.

Late 1800's and first quarter of 1900's.

I think the site was used even later than this, though it's beyond the time I'm looking for.

Several small mentions (and names)  in the newspapers but mostly late 1920 s.
The earliest mention I could find was 1918, a caravan for sale, Cambridge Grounds, Penistone Road, Owlerton.
I wonder if it had a different name previously.

General family names really, relating to my other recent post on this section.

Cambridge Grounds is not very far at all from the pub where Annie (Ann) Huteson was living in 1901. With the father of her child Joseph Rogers, being shown as a Traveller, I was hoping there might be a trace of him there......even better if it's with two kids in tow.

I suppose the question would be, woyld such sites have been covered by those conducting the census?

My grandparents were on Cambridge Grounds on occasions in the 1920's.   John (Jack) Whiting with his wife and family Mary Ellen Whiting.  They were travellers with the fairground
