Title: Margaret Fitzpatrick ,South Australia
Post by: L44 on Tuesday 05 January 21 01:25 GMT (UK)
I am trying to find out information about my Great Great Grandmother,Margaret Kiernan/Kearnan
( née Fitzpatrick )
She was born Oct 2 1857/58 in Auburn SA. Her father was John Fitzpatrick. In obituary says she is the sister of the late Thomas Fitzpatrick of Laura and the late M Fitzpatrick of Queensland. That’s all the information I have of her family .
She married Arthur Kiernan/Kearnan in 1879. Had 6 children. Arthur and 5 Chn moved to WA .
I have found a lot of info about Arthur and the children but nothing on Margaret and her parents and siblings. Hope someone can help.

QLD BDM
Mathew FITZPATRICK.....died  15/04/1890
Parents   Mary SMITH / John FITZPATRICK
Registration details:1890/C/468

Using BDM QLD and searching FITZPATRICK births with Mat(t)hew father...to 1891.....I do not see any.

Searching FITZGERALD deaths with father Mat(t)hew father......I do not see any.

Births might not be recorded at isolated locations.  Matthew FIRZPATRICK dies a trauma (unexpected) death......and there is someone around who can name his parents for the death certificate?.

That death certificate, 1890, might be useful to your research.

The death of Mary as listed by Wivenhoe in reply #5 in 1906 is in my opinion the correct one.

In this news item reporting the death at her daughter's home, Mrs Byrne, W A papers are requested to copy.  Seems likely that there were relatives of the KIERNAN/FITZPATRICK families still there.

Colonist of 56 years aged 84.

Once again thanks everyone for your help. I’ve been trying to digest all the information that was found.
I have a query.
It was posted that a Bridget Fitzpatrick married a John Byrne in 1873
but in the article dated 1892 it mentions John and E Byrne
and it is mentioned a daughter Elizabeth dies in 1883 of lung problems

Refering back to post #5.
Mary Bryne dies in NSW and the newspaper says mother is E. Byrne, but the death record has parents as Bridget and John. Yes, confusing.
I believe the Elizabeth who died 1883 is a different daughter - probably not married.

I would say the letter E ( E. BYRNE) in the newspaper report is a typographical error on behalf of the newspaper.

There was only one Mary BYRNE who died in that year at Broken Hill with father John and her mother's name was Bridget.

Hi,  some questions or consideration ... perhaps rhetorical only.

 :D could the newspaper have a typo ... E instead of B

:D could Bridget have been known as Biddy ?   If so,  what if that was Mis heard as Libby?  And then others presumed Libby was her nickname for Elizabeth.

Just a thought or two

Thank you for everyone’s help.
I have been searching for the past couple of days and came across Mary Fitzpaticks will. It mentions 2 more Chn. William and John.
I’ve also been also trying to find when John and Mary arrived in Aust and from where they came.
From the info provided Mary must have been born about 1822 and immigrated 1850 at age 28
If I have the correct John who died May 23 1900, he would have been born about 1816 and immigrated 1845 at age 29

I found a mention in the papers of a Mary and Kate Smyth arriving Adelaide 1851 onboard CANDAHAR. I then could not find a passenger list to check ages, etc. , but you might have more luck.

In May 1891 a John Fitzpatrick, 73y from Auburn was admitted to the RAH. He was a shepherd who’d arrived 41 years earlier from Ireland on the "Agincourt".

He’s #830 on the following page: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS6D-8SJR-7

On the “Agincourt” arriving NSW 8 April 1852 there is
John Fitzpatrick, age 21, a ploughman and farm labourer from Kilkenny Ireland, Roman Catholic, able to read and write.
With him is a brother James, age 18

Added: I think this is the wrong man - I think it is the John who married Mary Flannagan.

Do you think the John Fitzpatrick who died 23 May 1900 is the one who was married to Mary Smyth/Smith.
So born around 1816 and immigrated around 1845 at age 29
Title: Re: Margaret Fitzpatrick ,South Australia
Post by: Neale1961 on Thursday 14 January 21 01:01 GMT (UK)
Yes, I do think that is probably the correct death. His age at death and immigration time could be very approximate in the newspaper report. I would look at his marriage record for a better idea of his age, and other details that might be useful in tracking him.
He may not have come directly into Adelaide. He could have arrived in any other state and made his way to SA.

Added: Another voyage of the "Agincourt" also came in to NSW in 1848 - but no sign of a John Fitzpatrick there.

RE... I’ve also been also trying to find when John and Mary arrived in Aust and from where they came.
From the info provided Mary must have been born about 1822 and immigrated 1850 at age 28.

A possibility for these SMITHs from Westmeath, Ireland on the ship Sultana that arrived 24 Jul 1850.
Elizabeth 43 - mother
Mary 23
Matthew 22

Is it a coincidence that two Fitzpatrick children were named Elizabeth and Matthew?

I wish it was a coincidence-but if you go by Mary Fitzpatricks death notice - she died at age 84 in 1906-which would make her 28 in 1850

What documents do you have for BDM events in the lives of the people named so far?

At reply #31

Death for Mary FITZPATRICK is 23 Mar 1906

Birth year for Bridget FITZPATRICK, married 1873, will not be 1866.  Where do you see an indication of birth year for Bridget BYRNE nee FITZPATRICK?.

The marriage certificate, FITZGERALD - SMYTH, 1853, would be useful for your research.....it is the earliest evidence you have for John FITZPATRICK and Mary SMYTH.

Names of witnesses on the marriage certificate might lead to other family  members.  Guided by her reported age at death, 1906, Mary FITZPATRICK nee SMYTH would seem to be older at marriage that usual for the times.

Where are John FITZPATRICK, died 1900.....and wife Mary FITZPATRICK died 1906.....buried.

Are there other burials in the same plot?

The Will for Mary FITZGERALD  (Familysearch) and written August 1905, names her children....John FITZPATRICK....William FITZPATRICK....Bridget BYRNE.

The order of naming might suggest their birth order....John  before William, William before Bridget.

Bridget lives in Clare, South Australia. Location is not used to identify her in this instance.  Does that suggest that John and William, at 1905, are also resident in South Australia?

Title: Re: Margaret Fitzpatrick ,South Australia
Post by: L44 on Tuesday 19 January 21 01:48 GMT (UK)
Sorry. 1866 I’d definitely the incorrect birth date for Bridget Fitzpatrick
I tried looking for the burial place for both John and Mary but no luck.
If you go by the death notices in Trove ,Mary would have been 28 when she arrived in Australia around 1850
John would have been 29 and arrived around 1845
So at time of marriage Mary 31,John 37.
2nd marriages!!!
