Title: Josiah Bennett - beginning an English family research
Post by: Honningsvesken on Monday 04 January 21 12:38 GMT (UK)
Hi!

I am researching on behalf of my husband from Stockport - I myself am Danish and his fathers side was Scottish, so the English Cheshire side is new to me.

I googled his grand fathers name (Josiah Bennett of Hazel Grove, 1916-1953) and this post came up https://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=28578.msg115444#msg115444

I have done to searching on http://www.cheshirebmd.org.uk/, but the info on the search results are sparse (no dates, parents names on births etc.).

How do I go about this? Is there a place where I can search the census? In Denmark everything is free and available online in on spot, so Britain is no easy task for me and I am thankful for any help I can get :-)

Also https://www.freecen.org.uk & https://www.freereg.org.uk
available free, transcribed by volunteers.

ADDED: Welcome from me too  :). Most rootschat members are very helpful and will be willing to help using all the resources they have available. You are never researching on your own once you have put up a rootschat query.

However I suggest you change the subject of your post to say Josiah Bennett in the title. You can do this within 24 hours of posting by hitting the 'Modify' button at the top right of your first post. This will help focus the search.

I looked at the scans on ancestry. The ecclesiastical parish is Hall Street so maybe the parish was the field for the transcriber rather than the street address?

Wow thanks for your help - this will get me started in the right direction!

I am wondering - are death certificates / causes of death available anywhere? Mary Roberts were only 33 and maybe she died in child bed?

You can get an emailed .pdf birth & death certificates from https://www.gro.gov.uk. You have to register first [for free] but certificates cost [off the top of my head] about £7. You need the GRO index reference, available from GRO index or freebmd.

Marriage certificates cost more as they are paper copies sent by post.

Deaths Mar 1895
